“…Especially, the activity of PPO was significantly higher in resistant cultivars ('Wangshuibai' and 'Sumai 3') than in the susceptible cultivars. PPO may play a defensive role in FHB resistance in 'Wangshuibai' and 'Sumai 3' (Nicholson et al 2007). The relationship between the presence of phenolic compounds in plant tissues and resistance to fungal pathogens has been reported.…”

“…The defence‐responsive proteins, including pathogenesis‐related 10 (PR‐10), chitinases, xylanase inhibitors, proteinase inhibitors, and a class III peroxidase, were more abundant in the tolerant inbred line CO441. Pathogenesis‐related proteins β‐1,3‐glucanase (PR‐2) and chitinase (PR‐3) were observed in greater abundance in wheat line Arina, resistant to F. graminearum infection, in comparison to the susceptible line Agent (Kang & Buchenauer, 2002 ), inhibiting the hydrolysis of plant cell walls by pathogenic fungi (Nicholson et al, 2007 ). Reid and Altosaar ( 2019 ) observed up‐regulation of defence proteins in response to F. graminearum infection in maize lines CO441 and CL30.…”
