Introduction: Xerostomia (dry mouth, oral dryness) is the subjective sensation of dryness in the mouth. The gradual slight decrease in the secretion of saliva is physiologically related to aging of the body. Factors that predispose patients to the occurrence of dry mouth include systemic diseases, radiotherapy, anxiety and depression. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationship between dry mouth, depression and systemic diseases in respondents living in nursing homes (NH) and family homes (FH).Materials and methods: The study group comprised 226 respondents; 106 residents aged 55–101 years in two NH and 120 respondents living in FH. There were 110 men and 116 women. The study was based on the results of a diagnostic survey using an original questionnaire regarding general medical issues, and also the subjective feeling of dry mouth investigated with a standard Fox test. A shortened version of the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) was used to assess the wellbeing of patients and their state/sense of depression. The data obtained from the survey were analysed using Statistica 12 software (StatSoft Poland). Results: On the basis of the information and an analysis of the medical documentation of the NH group of patients, isolated systemic illness was found in only a limited number of patients. High blood pressure combined with heart disease was most frequently noted in NH (26.4%) and FH patients (25%). There was a significantly higher incidence of hypofunction and decreased secretion of saliva in NH patients (56.8%) than in FH patients (41.6%). No correlation between these symptoms and systemic diseases or depression was found in patients from either group. Conclusions: There was no correlation between the symptoms of dry mouth and the diagnosed systemic diseases in respondents from either group. The residents of NH were characterized by a worse mental state than those in FH. The symptoms of dry mouth were statistically significantly more frequent in residents of NH than in residents of FH. The residents of NH exhibiting worse mental state more often complained of a dry mouth sensation, however the difference was not statistically significant.

Introduction. The issues of dental office accessibility, professionalism of the service as well as treatment reimbursement often determine geriatric patients’ decision regarding treatment. In the era of an aging society, struggling with the intensification of disease processes of the entire system, the belief of the elderly about the value and availability of dental treatments is the key to the wide use of the achievements of modern dental medicine. Thanks to this, there is a chance to improve oral health, which will directly improve the overall health condition of this age group. Aim. The aim of the study was to know the opinions of senior patients about the quality and availability of dental care for this age group. Materials and methods. The study was conducted during the Lublin Seniors Meeting LUB-SENIOR 2019 among 100 randomly selected people of both sexes aged 60-75 living in Lublin, who are not residents of retirement homes. An anonymous direct questionnaire with 7 questions regarding dental care was used. Results. After analyzing the answers given by the respondents (n=100), it was found that 84% of them showed satisfaction with the dental care available to them. Among the surveyed seniors, 81% declared having their own dentist, while 25% expressed the willingness to change him. As much as 80% of the respondents declared that dentists pay attention to seniors dental health problems. A friendly approach of the dental team to a senior patient was declared by 61% of the respondents. Preferences concerning the use of dental treatment in private offices were reported by 44% of thepeople, and within the procedures provided by the NHF – by 45%. Conclusions. The surveyed senior patients show attachment to their dentist, while expressing a positive opinion on dental care and the treatment. Few people in the studied age group show the willingness to change dentists, which is directly influenced by the doctors’ interest in health problems of the elderly.
The article presents the current research findings relating to nutraloaf, a food product found in some prisons, e.g., in the United States. It can be served instead of one or every meal in order to reduce the costs of feeding prisoners or it can be used as disciplinary punishment. Nutraloaf contains a blend of the nutrients that make up a normal dish, but it does not have an appetizing taste. The article investigates whether serving nutraloaf would be an acceptable nutritional practice in the civil law system of European Union countries, especially Poland, in line with the binding provisions of international law and national standards. The article is based on an analysis of legal texts, judgments, scholarly research, and reports on the practice. The study takes into account the anthropological, sociological, and penal/executive perspective. Research on the psychology of food was also referred to.
