The Functional Mobility Scale (FMS)

Abstract: We devised a new Functional Mobility Scale (FMS) to describe functional mobility in children with cerebral palsy, as an aid to communication between orthopaedic surgeons and health professionals. The unique feature of the FMS is the freedom to score functional mobility over three distinct distances, chosen to represent mobility in the home, at school and in the wider community. We examined the construct, content, and concurrent validity of the FMS in a cohort of 310 children with cerebral palsy by comparing th… Show more

“…The FMS is unique because it allows quick, practical scoring of mobility over three distinct distances representing mobility in the home (5 m), at school (50 m), and in the community (500 m). In this way, it is effective for distinguishing between groups of children with varying levels of disabilities and provides a means for standardized communication between health professionals [19].…”

“…The FMS reports the level of assistance required to ambulate over distances of 5m, 50m, and 500m. 22 It is complementary to the GMFCS, is sensitive to change after SEMLS, and can be used as an outcome measure.8 At 12 months after SEMLS, a full assessment was performed, including three-dimensional gait analysis and recording of GMFCS level and FMS. Children were then reviewed in the gait laboratory every 6 to 12 months according to clinical indications.…”
