The functional anatomy of the cysticercoid of Choanotaenia crassiscolex (Linstow 1890) (Dilepididae) from the digestive gland of Oxychilus cellarius (Müll) (Stylommatophora), with some observations on developmental stages

Abstract: 1. Four stages in the development of Choanotaenia crassiscolex are described with the help of five text figures and one plate.2. The functional anatomy of the cysticercoid is given with the help of diagrams.3. The identification is based on comparisons with material at the British Museum of Natural History, South Kensington, London, and comparison is made with earlier records in Table 1.4. The unusual cyclophyllidean scolex is discussed and tentative suggestions and queries concerning the general form of the e… Show more

“…In Aberystwyth, cysticercoids of this cyclophyllidean cestode were frequently recovered from the digestive gland of the glossy snail Oxychilus helveticus (Blum) and when fed to laboratory mice, the cysts were found attached to the upper small intestine after three days and started maturing 16 days after initial infection. Measurements of the adults and cysticercoids of C. crassiscolex closely resembled those made by Harper (1930), Joyeux & Baer (19366), Kisielewska (1958) and Rawson & Rigby (1960).…”

“…The cysticercoids of Choanotaenia crassiscolex recovered in the present study could be identified by the size, shape and number of the rostellar hooks. The size of the cysts was also similar to the size of those found by Harper (1930), Kisielewska (1958a) and Rawson & Rigby (1960). The latter authors gave a detailed description of the cysticercoids.…”
