Nickel, a widely used heavy metal, exerts potent toxic effects on peripheral tissues as well as on the reproductive system. Low dietary protein coupled with exposure to this metal induces more severe changes, including biochemical defects, structural disorders, and altered physiologic functions. This study was designed to assess the effects of nickel sulfate on testicular steroidogenesis and to ascertain whether such alterations are reversible with normal protein and protein-restricted dietary regime. Nickel sulfate [2 mg/100 g body weight (bw)] dissolved in double-distilled water was administered on alternate days for 10 doses in a normal protein diet (18% casein) and a protein-restricted diet (5% casein) to Wistar male albino rats (bw 160 +/- 5 g). Two groups, one with a normal protein diet and the other with a protein-restricted diet, served as controls. Twenty-four hours after the last treatment, all the animals except those in withdrawal groups were sacrificed by decapitation. We observed a significant reduction in the activities of the testicular steroidogenic enzymes and plasma testosterone concentration accompanied by a significant elevation in cholesterol and ascorbic acid level in both dietary groups. After 15 days of withdrawal from the nickel sulfate treatment, the testicular steroidogenic enzymes, along with plasma testosterone level, improved significantly in both normal protein-fed and protein-restricted dietary groups. The effects of nickel on testicular cholesterol and ascorbic acid concentration were also reduced after withdrawal. Our results indicate that nickel sulfate affects the steroidogenic enzymes, causing alteration in the formation of testosterone in both dietary groups, which was manifested in the elevated cholesterol and ascorbic acid level with decreased activities of steroidogenic enzymes in adult rats testes. However, these alterations were reversible in both groups of animals fed normal protein diets and protein-restricted diets.

Cette thèse s’intéresse à la profession vétérinaire et à la santé animale à travers l’étude d’un sous-segment particulier : les vétérinaires homéopathes. S’inscrivant dans la perspective de la sociologie des professions et des groupes professionnels, elle questionne la place que ce sous-segment occupe, sa constitution et les pratiques thérapeutiques que mettent en oeuvre ces professionnels minoritaires. Depuis l’émergence de la doctrine homéopathique au XVIIIe siècle, les tenants de cette thérapie se trouvent marginalisés au sein de la médecine allopathique, les vétérinaires n’échappant pas à ce déficit de légitimité. A travers une enquête empirique portant sur trente-trois vétérinaires formés initialement comme vétérinaires allopathes et qui exercent l’homéopathie, – vingt en Suisse (neuf hommes et onze femmes) et treize en France (dix hommes et trois femmes) –, ce travail étudie les luttes récurrentes entre les professionnels tenants de la médecine orthodoxe et hétérodoxe, en tant que luttes de « jurisdiction » au sens d’Andrew Abbott. Une première partie porte attention à la constitution de groupements associatifs et de formations mis en place pour légitimer le segment et sa « scientificité ». Les vétérinaires homéopathes font face à des enjeux de professionnalisation spécifiques puisqu’ils combinent une socialisation professionnelle de vétérinaire classique avec celle de vétérinaire homéopathe. La thèse s’attache à restituer leurs trajectoires biographiques et professionnelles pour montrer comment, quand et pour quelles raisons, ils bifurquent vers une pratique minoritaire, souvent dénigrée par leur profession d’origine, et pour comprendre pourquoi et jusqu’où ils intègrent plus ou moins l’homéopathie dans leurs pratiques professionnelles. Approfondissant ces traits distinctifs, la seconde partie de la thèse montre l’existence de deux profils qui revendiquent et légitiment des pratiques professionnelles et qui soit renoncent aux médicaments et aux traitements conventionnels (les vétérinaires homéopathes « puristes »), soit y recourent dans certains cas (les vétérinaires « pluriels »). La prescription d’antibiotiques, la possibilité de remplir le rôle de la profession avec ou sans, sont au coeur des tensions internes qui animent ce sous-segment mais les deux profils se réclament du mandat confié à la profession : soigner les animaux. Vu ces divisions, ce groupe s’expose aussi à des luttes externes et à des enjeux de légitimation auprès d’autres « auditoires », qui se manifestent dans les relations avec les vétérinaires travaillant dans les services étatiques auxquelles est consacrée la dernière section de la thèse. L’ensemble de la profession vétérinaire doit faire face à de « nouveaux » défis tels que l’antibiorésistance, cette « pandémie silencieuse » selon l’Organisation Mondiale de la Santé (OMS). Si les pratiques quotidiennes des vétérinaires sont particulièrement pointées du doigt, les vétérinaires privilégiant les médecines complémentaires et alternatives dans leur pratique ne se placent toutefois pas comme un sous-segment privilégié pour lutter contre ce phénomène.
