The Frequency of Transition of Chronic Low Back Pain to Fibromyalgia

Abstract: In a retrospective study, the outcome of the chronic low back pain syndrome was investigated in a group of 53 patients. Average time since the diagnosis was established was 18 years. 25% of the patients--all female but one--developed fibromyalgia. The criteria of Yunus and Wolfe, modified by Müller and Lautenschläger, were applied to establish the diagnosis of fibromyalgia. In 60% of the patients chronic low back pain persisted at the time of final examination, while 8 patients were asymptomatic. Predictive pa… Show more

“…The authors describe a transition rate of 25% in patients with CLBP, a fi gure which is in accordance with a previous study by Lapossy et al . 11 In summary, there are only few population-based studies evaluating the CWP transition from CRP in general, even less from CLBP, and no studies using the primary care setting. However, CWP incidence is high among patients with CLBP, which underlines the relevance of the problem.…”

“…In a long-term prospective study, the presence of low back pain also seemed to predict the development of FM [49]. The development of FM, however, occurred only in 25% of patients with back pain during an 18-year period [56]. Female gender and postural disorders were significant predictors of this transition.…”

“…Population-based studies suggest that chronic widespread pain is seen in 5% to 15% of the population (9). A number of studies reported that widespread pain may occur among patients with CLBP (4,15), whereas other studies also suggest that widespread pain may be a result of CLBP (17). Many factors, including demographic (18,19), psychosocial (20,21), environmental (22), and structural abnormalities (5,23), have been investigated to better understand the mechanism of hypersensitivity and widespread pain in patients with CLBP.…”
