Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the demographic characteristics and intraoperative complications of cataract surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PEX). Materials and Methods:Cases of 225 eyes (80 eyes with pseudoexfoliation and 145 eyes without pseudoexfoliation as the control group) that underwent phacoemulsification cataract surgery and IOL implantation at the Silifke State Hospital Ophthalmology Clinic between April 2011 and April 2013 were analysed retrospectively. Patients with a history of previous ocular surgeries, ocular trauma, uveitis, glaucoma or corneal pathology were not included in the study. All cataract procedures were performed by the same surgeon. Patients' age, gender, anterior segment and fundus findings in both eyes, presence of pseudoexfoliative material, pre-and postoperative day 1 intraocular pressure (IOP) and surgery notes were evaluated.Results: There were 51 (34.7%) males and 29 (38.6%) females among the PEX cataract patients, and 98 (65.3%) male and 47 (61.8%) female controls. The incidence of pseudoexfoliation was similar in women (38.2%) and men (34.7%) (p=0.660). The mean age was 74.64±6.8 in the PEX group and 68.95±7.5 in the control group. Mean age was significantly higher in the PEX group compared to controls (p<0.001). Poor pupil dilation occurred intra-operatively in 60 (75%) of the patients with pseudoexfoliation and in 17 (11.7%) of the control patients. Frequency of poor intraoperative pupil dilation was significantly higher in the PEX group (p<0.001). Intraoperative vitreous loss occurred in 7 (8.8%) PEX patients and 5 (3.4%) controls, but this difference was statistically insignificant (p=0.090).Conclusion: Surgeons should be aware of the potential complications of cataract procedures in patients with PEX. Aim. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of exfoliation syndrome in the Central Anatolia region of Turkey and to evaluate its relationship with cardiovascular and ocular diseases. Methods. Patients over the age of 45 years who presented to the clinic were included in the study. All cases underwent a comprehensive ophthalmology examination. Exfoliation syndrome was diagnosed with the presence of exfoliative material on the lens anterior capsule or iris on slit lamp examination. The patients were divided into two groups as the exfoliation syndrome group and nonexfoliation syndrome group according to the presence of exfoliative material. Results. Exfoliative material was found in one or both eyes of 212 of the 2103 patients (10.1%) evaluated within the scope of the study. A significant relationship was found between exfoliation syndrome and increasing age and male gender. A significant relationship was found between exfoliation syndrome and glaucoma, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and phacodonesis. While no relationship was found between exfoliation syndrome and hypertension or diabetes mellitus, a significant relationship was found with coronary artery disease. Conclusion. The unilateral or bilateral exfoliation syndrome frequency was 10.1% in this hospital-based study. A statistically significant relationship was found between exfoliation syndrome and advancing age, gender, and coronary artery disease.

Ö ÖZ ZE ET T AAm ma aç ç: : Klinik olarak tek taraflı psödoeksfoliasyon materyali (PEM) saptanan hastalarda çe-şitli ön segment parametrelerini, hastaların diğer gözleri ve kontrol grubu ile karşılaştırmaktır. G Ge er re eç ç v ve e Y Yö ön nt te em ml le er r: : Tek taraflı olarak PEM saptanan 50 hasta ile rutin göz muayenesi normal olan 50 birey çalışmaya dâhil edildi. Hastaların ayrıntılı oftalmolojik muayeneleri yapıldı. Geçirilmiş göz içi cerrahisi ve lazer tedavisi, travma, üveit öyküsü olanlar çalışmadan dışlandı. En iyi düzeltilmiş görme keskinliği (EİDGK), sferik ekivalan (SE), aksiyel uzunluk (AU), santral kornea kalınlığı (SKK), kornea endotel hücre sayısı, ön kamara derinliği (ÖKD), ön kamara hacmi (ÖKH) ve ön kamara flare değerleri kaydedildi. Bu parametreler hastaların diğer gözleri ve kontrol grubuyla karşılaştırıldı. B Bu ul lg gu ul la ar r: : Ortalama yaş PEM saptanan olgularda 67,6±7,63 yıl, kontrol grubunda 65,4±5,1 yıl idi. EİDGK, PEM (+) gözlerde kontrol grubuna göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı şekilde düşük saptandı (p<0,0001). Kornea endotel sayısının PEM'li hastaların her iki gözünde de kontrol grubuna göre düşük olduğu görüldü (p<0,001). Gruplar arasında SE, AU, SKK, ÖKD ve ÖKH açısından istatistiksel olarak fark saptanmadı. Ön kamara flare değer-leri PEM (+) gözlerde, PEM (-) gözlere ve kontrol grubuna göre istatistiksel olarak anlamlı şe-kilde yüksek bulundu. Ayrıca, hastaların PEM (-) gözlerinde de ön kamara flare değerlerinin kontrol grubuna göre anlamlı şekilde yüksek olduğu saptandı (p<0.0001).
