The Frequency and Prognostic Impact of Fever Following Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

Abstract: Objectives: This study soughtto explore the frequency and prognostic implications of infectious and noninfectious fever following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI). Methods: We performed a retrospective cohort study including 194 consecutive patients who underwent TAVI at our institution. We identified and characterized all patients who developed fever within the first 72 h following the procedure. We determined the etiology of the fevers (infectious vs. noninfectious) and assessed their impact on… Show more

“…The occurrence of fever following transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a well-known phenomenon during the first 72 h after TAVI, which may occur from systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) rather than an infectious cause [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. SIRS in TAVI patients is presumably multifactorial, associated DOI: 10.1159/000511621 with implanted devices, biomaterial, and procedural aspects [10].…”

“…The design and management of the Rabin Medical Center TAVR registry has been reported previously. [21][22][23] In brief, all patients with severe and symptomatic aortic stenosis were referred to a dedicated consultation "heart team" forum at our hospital. All patients considered for valve replacement were assessed by coronary and peripheral angiography.…”

“…In a recent issue of Cardiology , Orvin et al [1] report on their experience with 198 consecutive patients who underwent transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) at the Rabin Medical Center in Petach Tikva, Israel. This was a retrospective cohort study of all patients with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis who were deemed inoperable or at high surgical risk for conventional aortic valve replacement.…”
