The paper concentrates on the problem of age discrimination in the labour market and the way it can be conceptualised and measured in a multi-disciplinary way. The approach proposed here combines two understandings of age discrimination-a sociological and legal one, what allows for a fuller and expanded understanding of ageism in the workplace. At the heart of the study is a survey carried out in Poland with a sample of 1000 men and women aged 45-65 years. The study takes a deeper and innovative look into the issue of age discrimination in employment. Confirmatory factor analysis with WLSMV estimation and logistic regressions were used to test the hypotheses. The study shows that age discrimination in labour market can take on different forms: hard and soft, where the hard type of age discrimination mirrors the legally prohibited types of behaviours and those which relate to the actual decisions of employers which can impact on the employee's career development. The soft discrimination corresponds with those occurrences, which are not inscribed in the legal system per se, are occurring predominantly in the interpersonal sphere, but can nevertheless have negative consequences. Soft discrimination was experienced more often (28.6% of respondents) than hard discrimination (15.7%) with higher occurrences among women, persons in precarious job situation or residents of urban areas. The role of education was not confirmed to influence the levels of perceived age discrimination.

Background: Widespread negative attitudes toward aging in the U.S. are obstacles to training care providers and providing high quality care. Studies identifying educational effects on attitudes toward older people are still inconclusive. Objective: To examine the impact of learning experiences on university student attitudes toward older people. Methods: Design: A quasi-experimental design with a comparison group study. A total of 147 students registered in nursing and non-nursing programs completed three instruments measuring attitudes toward aging at three month intervals. All nursing students in the study were undertaking gerontology nursing course. Results: All participants expressed more positive attitudes in direct measures than indirect measures. Nursing students taking this gerontology course had significantly lower negative attitudes and negative feelings toward older adults, lower anti-age bias, and improvement in pro-age bias over time as compared to non-nursing students. Conclusions: The findings suggest that: 1) improved knowledge and clinical experience of aging reduce negative attitudes and are fundamental steps in developing positive attitudes for caring for older adults; and 2) comparative research using multiple measures provides a better understanding of attitudes toward older people.

Si le poids des syndicats constitue une variable contextuelle importante en matière de management de la diversité, l’incidence de l’appartenance syndicale en elle-même est moins connue. S’appuyant sur l’enquête ESS 2008-2009 sollicitée par la Commission Européenne et menée auprès de 48 141 individus répartis dans 25 pays européens, cette étude vise à apprécier l’impact négatif de l’appartenance syndicale sur l’âgisme envers les personnes âgées. Bien que l’appartenance syndicale dans les pays d’Europe du Nord est souvent expliquée par les avantages matériels auxquels elle ouvre droit, elle réduit davantage l’âgisme dans ces pays que dans les autres pays d’Europe.If the weight of trade unions is an important contextual variable in terms of diversity management, the impact of union membership itself is less known. Based on the 2008-2009 ESS survey requested by the European Commission and conducted among 48,141 people in 25 European countries, this study aims to assess the negative impact of union membership on ageism towards the elderly. Although union membership in the countries of Northern Europe is often explained by the material benefits which it opens up, it further reduces ageism in these countries compared to other European countries.El peso de los sindicatos es una variable contextual importante en términos de gestión de la diversidad.
