The Founder of Modern Geology Died 100 Years Ago: The Scientific Work and Legacy of Eduard Suess

Abstract: Eduard Suess (1831-1914) is probably the greatest geologist who ever lived. He died 100 years ago and left us the modern geology as we know it. His work ranged from paleontology through stratigraphy, geomorphology, urban geology, finally to tectonics. His magnum opus was the multi-volume Das Antlitz der Erde (The Face of the Earth), the greatest book in the history of geology. It is a complete description of the geology of the planet from the viewpoint of the theory of thermal contraction in Constant Prévost’s… Show more

“…Originally, when defining the term "eustatic", Suess (1888) relied on physical evidence for raised beaches above the prevailing sea-level and shifting fossil shorelines, i.e. fully marine sediments overlying non-marine sediments (Wagreich et al, 2014;Şengör, 2015). Such physical evidence has since been incorporated into the development of sequence stratigraphy, where the reconstruction of shifting shorelines (shoreline trajectories, e.g.…”

“…so-called eustatic sea-level changesin contrast to relative or regional (termed eurybatic shifts by Haq, 2014) sea-level changes (see Chapter 2.1. below for details). The term eustasy, goes back to the Austrian geologist Eduard Suess in 1888 who introduced the term "eustatic movements" for the globally synchronous sea-level changes preserved in the stratigraphic record, which is how it is used in the modern sense (for details see Wagreich et al, 2014;Şengör, 2015). In the context of eustatic sea-level change, terms such as "glacio-eustasy" or "glacio-eustatic sea-level changes" (eustatic sea-level changes caused by the waxing and waning of continental ice shields that lead to an increasing or decreasing water volume in the oceans), thermo-eustatic sea-level changes, tectono-eustatic sea-level changes etc., have subsequently been coined.…”

“…He published a comprehensive synthesis of his ideas in three volumes in five parts (Suess, 1883, 1885, 1888, 1901, 1909) entitled Das Antlitz der Erde (translated into English as The Face of the Earth ), one of the most fundamental texts of modern geology. Suess also coined the terms Laurentia, Caledonian Mountains, Variscan Mountains, Panthalassa, biosphere, lithosphere, hydrosphere, eustasy, foreland, hinterland, listric fault, horst and graben, today part of the established Earth sciences vocabulary and closely connected with plate tectonics and palaeogeography (see Şengör, 2014 a , 2015).…”
