The Five Ws (and one H) of Super-Hydrophobic Surfaces in Medicine

Abstract: Super-hydrophobic surfaces (SHSs) are bio-inspired, artificial microfabricated interfaces, in which a pattern of cylindrical micropillars is modified to incorporate details at the nanoscale. For those systems, the integration of different scales translates into superior properties, including the ability of manipulating biological solutions. The five Ws, five Ws and one H or the six Ws (6W), are questions, whose answers are considered basic in information-gathering. They constitute a formula for getting the com… Show more

“…Therefore, this method is solution-wasteful and time-consuming, moreover, it is incompetent to identify weakadsorptive molecules, especially for limited organic solutions of target molecules. [ 48 ] Therefore, it is an urgent issue to develop a facile, rapid route to detect the organic molecules by SERS enhancement without solution saving.…”

“…The extremity of the molecule can, for example, be functionalized with biotin that can interact specifically with Streptavidin previously bound to a surface [4]. Here we briefly present a new application of the devices presented in [5][6][7][8][9][10][11] where no DNA modification is required. The method relies on the selfaggregation of DNA on teflonated super hydrophobic Silicon textured surface.…”

“…Superhydrophobic substrates represent a novel platform for the controlled deposition of nanomaterials . Recently, controlled motion of the three phase contact line (TCL) of liquid drops loaded with nanomaterials on superhydrophobic substrates has enabled the fabrication of suspended NWs.…”
