The First Year of Global Cleft Surgery Education Through Digital Simulation

Abstract: The Internet shows promise as a platform for surgical education and may help address restrictions and reduce disparities in surgical training. The virtual surgical simulator presented may serve as the foundation for the development of a global curriculum in cleft repair.

“…Ten are 3-dimensional (3D) models constructed from various materials (Matthews, 1999; Pappachan et al, 2006; Vadodaria et al, 2007; Nagy and Mommaerts, 2009; Senturk, 2013; Liu et al, 2014; Rau et al, 2015; Pinho et al, 2016; Podolsky et al, 2017; Cote et al, 2018). One model is a computer simulation with integrated haptic feedback (Schendel et al, 2005), and one model is a computer simulation that can be used from any Internet browser or mobile application (Plana et al, 2018).…”

“…The cost of the model was reported in 3 studies (Rau et al, 2015; Cote et al, 2018, Plana et al, 2018). Five models were described by the authors as being inexpensive (Matthews, 1999; Nagy and Mommaerts, 2009; Senturk, 2013; Liu et al, 2014; Pinho et al, 2016) .…”

“…In recent years, the technology has been further developed, yielding digital simulations involved in human–computer interactions, which enabled students to study each surgical step in great detail. 132 134 Each step of cleft lip nasal deformity reconstruction was listed. The students and doctors can choose the step they want to learn and view the manoeuvre from different angles.…”
