Recent reform of medical education highlights the growing concerns about the capability of the current educational model to equip medical school students with essential skills for future career development. In the field of ophthalmology, although many attempts have been made to address the problem of the decreasing teaching time and the increasing load of course content, a growing body of literature indicates the need to reform the current ophthalmology teaching strategies. Flipped classroom is a new pedagogical model in which students develop a basic understanding of the course materials before class, and use in-class time for learner-centered activities, such as group discussion and presentation. However, few studies have evaluated the effectiveness of the flipped classroom in ophthalmology education. This study, for the first time, assesses the use of flipped classroom in ophthalmology, specifically glaucoma and ocular trauma clerkship teaching. A total number of 44 international medical school students from diverse background were enrolled in this study, and randomly divided into two groups. One group took the flipped glaucoma classroom and lecture-based ocular trauma classroom, while the other group took the flipped ocular trauma classroom and lecture-based glaucoma classroom. In the traditional lecture-based classroom, students attended the didactic lecture and did the homework after class. In the flipped classroom, students were asked to watch the prerecorded lectures before the class, and use the class time for homework discussion. Both the teachers and students were asked to complete feedback questionnaires after the classroom. We found that the two groups did not show differences in the final exam scores. However, the flipped classroom helped students to develop skills in problem solving, creative thinking and team working. Also, compared to the lecture-based classroom, both teachers and students were more satisfied with the flipped classroom. Interestingly, students had a more positive attitude towards the flipped ocular trauma classroom than the flipped glaucoma classroom regarding the teaching process, the course materials, and the value of the classroom. Therefore, the flipped classroom model in ophthalmology teaching showed promise as an effective approach to promote active learning.

In 1835, Peter Parker, an American surgeon and Presbyterian minister, established a hospital in Guangzhou and became the first Western head and neck surgeon in China. While Parker documented his most interesting cases in his journals, he also commissioned oil paintings of these patients from Lam Qua ([Formula: see text]), a prominent Chinese artist trained in British academic painting. Lam Qua produced 86 portraits of Dr Parker’s patients, providing insight into not only the treatment of head and neck tumors but also the introduction of Western artistic techniques to 19th-century China. Parker’s pioneering surgical accomplishments and Lam Qua’s portraits document the role of art and medicine in America’s cultural influence in Asia.

IntroductionCongenital ectopia lentis (CEL) is a rare ocular disease characterised by the dislocation or displacement of the lens. Patients with mild lens dislocations can be treated with conservative methods (eg, corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses). In contrast, patients with severe CEL usually require surgical management. However, few studies have focused on the visual prognosis and complications in conservative and surgical management of patients. This study aims to investigate the prognosis and complications in patients with CEL with conservative and surgical management, which is vital for CEL management, especially the choice of surgical timing and surgical method.Methods and analysisA cohort study will be conducted at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center. We plan to recruit 604 participants diagnosed with CEL and aged ≥3 years old. Patients with mild lens subluxation and stable visual conditions will be included in the non-surgical group and follow-up at 1, 2 and 3 years after enrolment. Patients with severe lens subluxation who accept CEL surgery will be included in the surgical group. Different surgical techniques, including phacoemulsification, in-the-bag intraocular lens implantation (with or without capsular tension ring) and trans-scleral fixation, will be used depending on the severity of dislocation. Patients will be followed up at 3 months, and 1, 2 and 3 years postoperatively. Over a 5-year follow-up period, patients will receive a detailed ocular examination, including optometry, biological measurement, specular microscopy, ultrasound biomicroscopy, anterior segment and posterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT), OCT angiography, echocardiography and questionnaires on vision-related quality of life. The primary outcome is the change of best-corrected visual acuity and the incidence of complications in both groups.Ethics and disseminationEthics approval was obtained from the ethics committee of the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center (number: 2022KYPJ207). Study findings will be published in a peer-reviewed journal.Trial registration numberNCT05654025.
