This work aims to provide the first holistic and deep bibliometric mapping and analysis of the management of plastic waste. Data from the last five years were obtained from a Scopus database search. Relevant information on scientific production, contributions by country and institutions, sources, reference authors, and topic trends were obtained, being analysed using the VOSviewer and Bibliometrix R-package software programs. The results clearly have shown a significant increase in the number of publications over the years, depicting the great influence of the People’s Republic of China, since the most relevant authors, publications, and institutes are Chinese. Regarding the topic trends, there is a massive concern about plastic pollution, especially related to plastic in water bodies (mainly microplastics), and the socio-environmental problems which plastic may cause/aggravate, with recycling and the circular economy emerging as possible solutions.

Microplastic particles are found in environmental compartments all over the world and receive a great deal of attention, especially in the aquatic environment. Currently, a particularly high input of microplastics via Asian rivers is assumed, but so far, there are hardly any data through field measurements. Three rivers in South India were considered for this purpose to focus on their microplastic load. The emphasis was on the comparison of microplastic concentrations in urban and rural rivers. While two rivers in the megacity Chennai (Tamil Nadu) were found to have an average microplastic concentration of 0.4 microplastic particles/L, a rural river near Munnar (Kerala) had an average concentration of 0.2 microplastic particles/L. Rough estimates of annual microplastic discharge from the Adyar River (Chennai) into the Bay of Bengal are found to be as high as 11.6 trillion microplastic particles. This study should be one of the first baseline studies for microplastic loads in South Indian streams and should be complemented with further environmental sampling before, during and after the monsoon season to get more detailed information on the storage and transportation of fluvial microplastics under different weather conditions.

The major lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic has affected the socio-economic development of the world. On the other hand, there are also reports of reduced pollution levels. In this study, an indicative analysis is adopted to understand the effect of lockdown on the changes in the water quality parameters for Lake Hussain Sagar using two remote sensing techniques: (i) spectral reflectance (SR) and (ii) chromaticity analysis (Forel-Ule color Index (FUI) and Excitation Purity). The empirical relationships from earlier studies imply that (i) increase in SR values (band B2) indicates a reduction in Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) concentrations, and (ii) increase in FUI indicates an increase in Total Suspended Solids (TSS). The Landsat 8 OLI satellite images are adopted for comparison between (i) January to May of year 2020: the effect of lockdown on water quality, and (ii) March and April for years 2015 to 2020: historical variations in water quality. The results show notable changes in SR values and FUI due to lockdown compared to before lockdown and after unlock suggesting a significant reduction in lake water pollution. In addition, the historical variations within April suggest that the pollution levels are least in the year 2020.
