The First Report of Relative Incidence of Inherited White Matter Disorders in an Asian Country Based on an Iranian Bioregistry System

Abstract: Childhood leukodystrophies are a fast-growing field of pediatric neurology practice. Epidemiologic studies on the incidence of these disorders in children show different results. This is the first report of childhood leukodystrophies incidence from Iran. The enrolled patients were recruited from the neurometabolic bioregistry system that was organized in 2010 in the Children's Medical Center, Tehran, Iran. Herein is reported the incidence rate of leukodystrophies in those patients who were residents of 2 big p… Show more

“…Leukodystrophies are rare inherited white matter disorders affecting up to 3 children per 100,000 person-years. 1 They present with diverse combinations of neurologic and systemic manifestations. 2 Newly emerged molecular technolo-gies, such as next generation sequencing (NGS), allowed identification ofnovel leukodystrophies even extremely rare ones observed in only few individuals.…”

[7][8][9][10][11][12][13] Clinical recognition of leukodystrophies accelerated with the widespread clinical adoption of MRI in the 1980s and 1990s, 14,15 and recent improvements in genetic diagnosis techniques have led to specific diagnosis in more than half of all patients with leukodystrophy. 2,16,17 This document is copyrighted and is property of the American Academy of Pediatrics and its Board of Directors.…”
