The first report of porcine parvovirus 7 (PPV7) in Colombia demonstrates the presence of variants associated with modifications at the level of the VP2-capsid protein

Abstract: There are a wide variety of porcine parvoviruses (PPVs) referred to as PPV1 to PPV7. The latter was discovered in 2016 and later reported in some countries in America, Asia, and Europe. PPV7 as a pathogenic agent or coinfection with other pathogens causing disease has not yet been determined. In the present study, we report the identification of PPV7 for the first time in Colombia, where it was found retrospectively since 2015 in 40% of the provinces that make up the country (13/32), and the virus was ratified… Show more

“…PPV1 is one of the major causes of reproductive failure in swine worldwide, and the economic loss was high in the 1960s (Streck and Truyen 2020 ). For the particular clinical symptoms and affected tissues/organs of PPV2 to PPV7 are not determined, the pathogenesis of novel PPVs is unclear (Vargas-Bermudez et al 2021 ). Many researches have shown that PPV1 induced host cell apoptosis causing cell death, leading to sow reproductive failure (Zhang et al 2019 ).…”

“…The PPV7 strains have been reported to be divided into two different genotypes based on the complete genome sequences of PPV7 with MCC tree construction, while NJ and ML trees based on NS1 and Cap didn't display similar clusters ( 24 ). Another phylogenetic analysis with ML tree based on the capsid nucleotide sequences of PPV7 strains were made by Diana et al ( 14 ). Results showed that 52 PPV7 strains were divided into two different genotypes based on the presence or absence of a 5-aa deletion in the capsid protein.…”

“…Among them, the most recently reported PPV7 was initially identified from healthy pigs' rectal swab samples using metagenomic sequencing in America in 2016. Subsequently, PPV7 was detected in Sweden ( 9 ), Poland ( 10 ), Korea ( 11 ), China ( 12 ), Brazil ( 13 ), and Colombian ( 14 ).…”

“…While there are differing views of PPV7 phylogenetic analysis, the closest approximation is from a study by Wang et al ( 28 ), in which 45 PPV7 sequences reported to GenBank (some complete and others partial) were analyzed, and two well-differentiated clades were identified ( 28 ). Diana et al divided PPV7 into two clades based on the insertion of five amino acids at the 180–184aa of the VP2 protein ( 29 ). In addition, phylogenetic analysis of the NS1 gene divided PPV7 into six clades, phylogenetic analysis of the cap gene divided PPV7 into four clades, and phylogenetic analysis of the complete genome divided PPV7 into six clades.…”
