The first report of onychomycosis caused by Cryptococcus friedmannii ( Naganishia friedmannii ) a basidiomycetous yeast

Abstract: Yeasts are common etiologic agents of onychomycosis. This study reported a case of onychomycosis due to Cryptococcus friedmannii (Naganishia friedmannii). This yeast was isolated of the right great toenail of 57-year-old man. Microscopic examination of nail scrapings showed budding cells with thin capsule. Sequence analyzes of the internal transcribed spacer regions was closely related to Cryptococcus friedmannii. The results of susceptibility testing showed the Cryptococcus friedmannii to be sensitive to fluc… Show more

“…There is a chance that the extremophilic members of the genus Naganishia are being dispersed from some as yet undiscovered source habitat where sexual reproduction can occur. It is intriguing in this regard that there is a recent report of a pathogenic strain of N. friedmannii (Ekhtiaria et al 2017) – perhaps indicating that we are only just starting to understand the global reservoirs for extremophilic members of the genus Naganishia .…”

“…Limited data regarding the epidemiology of cryptococcosis are available in the Middle East [15]. Cryptococcosis is a relatively rare disease; accordingly, few cases of these infections were reported between 1969 and 2018 in Iran [16][17][18][19][20][21][22].…”
