The first record of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus in Germany

Abstract: Oriental weatherfish Misgurnus anguillicaudatus, from southern China, have been imported to Germany in large numbers for the garden pond trade. The first record of M. anguillicaudatus from Central Europe, a population that has been established for at least 14 years in a small nature reserve in Germany, is detailed.

“…In Europe, two different weatherfish populations have been reported to have established in the wild, one from northern Italy (Razzetti et al 2001) and another from Germany (Freyhof and Korte 2005). These populations are located in isolated ponds (Kottelat and Freyhof 2007), and range expansions have not yet been described.…”

“…The detection of M. anguillicaudatus in the Inn River catchment was unexpected since it is physically isolated and more than 300 km aerial distance apart from the sites where M. anguillicaudatus was first reported by Freyhof and Korte (2005) based on phenotypic characters. Since the species is not consumed in Europe, and since the use of live bait is not Fig.…”

Its main habitat is the web of irrigation channels associated with rice culture, and it also occurs in rice fields and in rivers (Nishida et al 2013; authors' pers.…”
