Oriental weatherfish has become an invasive fish species in many temperate areas. In this work we report the presence of an established weatherfish population in northeastern Iberian Peninsula and describe, for the first time in Europe, a clear range expansion. The species was first located in the Ebro River Delta in 2001 and has since been detected in 31 UTM 1 9 1 km quadrates. The capture of over 1,000 weatherfish shows that its population is composed by both juvenile and adult individuals. Weatherfish occupies mostly the web of irrigation channels associated with rice culture, although it has also been detected in rice fields and in the Ebro River. The expansion of the species in the area seems to be limited by water conductivity. An additional location for the species in the Ter basin (some 300 km to the north) suggests that inter-basin expansion could be occurring. This new fish invasion reinforces the need to implement strict controls to the trade and culture of ornamental fish.

-The Oriental Weatherfish is considered a globally invasive fish species. In Europe, several reported feral populations of Oriental Weatherfish display an overlapping distribution range with native weatherfish Misgurnus fossilis, a declining species of international conservation and aquatic management concern. Morphologically distinguishing the different weatherfish species can be difficult, as their coloration is highly variable, many species reveal high phenotypic plasticity, and morphological traits like coloration might be not obvious or might be degraded during field sampling and after preservation. Herein, we analysed suspicious weatherfish specimens from southern Germany, demonstrating the usefulness of molecular genetic species identifications in this genus. We present the first molecular genetic species record of Misgurnus anguillicaudatus in Central Europe, and confirm the range expansion of Oriental Weatherfish into the river Inn catchment in southern Germany. As accurate species identification is crucial both in the context of monitoring and conserving native endangered species, and in early detection and prevention of biological invasion, we suggest the standard use of genetic species identification if morphological traits are not obvious.Keywords: Misgurnus anguillicaudatus / Misgurnus fossilis / DNA barcoding / genetic species identification / biological invasion Résumé -Identification génétique des espèces de loche et première confirmation moléculaire de la présence de la loche baromètre Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (Cantor, 1842) en Europe centrale. La loche baromètre est considérée comme une espèce de poisson globalement invasif. En Europe, plusieurs populations sauvages signalées de la loche baromètre présentent une aire de répartition en chevauchement avec la loche d'étang indigène locale Misgurnus fossilis, une espèce en déclin, objet de conservation internationale et de gestion aquatique. La distinction morphologique des différentes espèces de loches peut être difficile, car leur coloration est très variable, de nombreuses espèces révèlent une forte plasticité phénotypique, et les traits morphologiques comme la coloration pourraient ne pas être évidents ou pourraient être dégradés lors de l'échantillonnage sur le terrain et après la conservation. Nous avons analysé les spécimens douteux du sud de l'Allemagne démontrant l'utilité des identifications génétiques moléculaires des espèces dans ce genre. Nous présentons les premières données d'identification génétique de l'espèce Misgurnus anguillicaudatus en Europe centrale et confirmons l'expansion géographique de la loche baromètre dans le bassin hydrographique de la rivière Inn dans le sud de l'Allemagne. The breeding herons and egrets in northwestern Italy derive a large portion of their food resources from rice fields. In order to investigate the possible effects of changes in rice cultivation techniques on the trends of the breeding population of these birds, we studied their diet and the prey availability in rice fields, and we compared the results for 2013 with the situation in past decades, by taking advantage of similar investigations conducted by our research team since 1978. The diet of five species of herons and egrets changed sharply after 1995, with the bulk of the diet now made up of completely new prey species, in particular the allochthonous Louisiana crayfish and Oriental weatherfish, that only recently colonized our study area, and with a lower frequency of the amphibians that were a staple prey before 2000, but whose abundance in rice fields has declined. Since 2000, the decrease in the populations of some breeders, particularly the most abundant Grey Heron and Little Egret, has coincided with their sharp change in diet, with the reduced availability of amphibians and with the diminished availability of flooded rice fields. However, the proportion of food resources obtained from rice fields versus the natural habitats remained high, or was only slightly lower for some predator species. Several issues remain open about the value of rice fields in supporting the foraging herons and egrets, and about the effect of changing agricultural techniques on the bird population. We need to assess more accurately the proportion of food obtained from rice fields, and to check whether the foraging herons and egrets can satisfy their energy requirements while foraging in agroecosystems.
