The first International Standard anti-Brucella melitensis Serum

Abstract: The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) requested an International Standard anti-Brucella melitensis Serum (ISaBmS) to standardise diagnostic tests and reagents for sheep and goats. The agreed criteria were the highest dilution (in negative serum) of the standard which must give a positive result and the lowest dilution (in negative serum) which must simultaneously give a negative result. The two dilutions for each assay were, respectively: indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (iELISA) 1/64 and 1/… Show more

“…Local serum standards could thus be established in different countries, allowing for the first time, the comparison of serological tests among different countries. A similar serum standard against B. melitensis infection in the small ruminant population has recently been described ( 41 ). Nonetheless, neither standard sera directly correlate with the diagnosis of human brucellosis.…”

“…International standard goat sera for brucellosis (EU Goat Brucella Standard Serum, EUGBSS, and WOAH International Standard anti- Brucella melitensis Serum, ISaBmS [ 29 ]) were included in this study to estimate the lower limit of detection. The ISaBmS was developed for harmonization of serological diagnostic tests against smooth Brucella in sheep and goats, and the EU Reference Laboratory later developed EUGBSS as a secondary standard [ 29 ].…”

“…One hundred fifty clinical samples were tested using ICST and the coefficients of the test results were compared with commercial RBPT. Serial 2-fold dilution of bovine Brucella positive standard sera from 1:2 to 1:256 were used in order to determine the sensitivity of RBPT [ 46 ].…”
