The first imported case of melioidosis in a patient in central China

Abstract: Here, we report the first imported case of melioidosis from Laos in central China. COMPACT VITEK2 identification system and PCR, as well as sequencing methods confirmed that the patient was infected by Burkholderia pseudomallei , a bacterial species closely related to an isolate detected in Thailand. These findings are highly valuable for an early diagnosis, treatment and to prevent the spread of this emerging infectious disease in central China.

“…The two strains of Burkholderia pseudomallei were identified correctly by the Autof MS1000, while the Bruker instrument failed to identify them. B. pseudomallei can cause melioidosis, making it an important strain with clinical significance [ 9 , 10 ]. This is a major error and should be noted.…”

“…The two strains of Burkholderia pseudomallei were identified correctly by the Autof MS 1000 and the Bruker instrument failed to identify. Burkholderia pseudomallei can cause pseudo necrosis of important clinical significance, and the recommended treatment period is 3-6 months [5], this is the major error and should be noted. Most of the other identification errors belongs to the identification of minor errors, such as Citrobacter freundii erroneously identified as Citrobacter braakii, Raoultella planticola incorrectly identified as Raoultella ornithinolytica, Staphylococcus haemolyticus incorrectly identified as Staphylococcus hominis (Table 1).…”

“…The 229 strains of Gram-Negative Enterobacteriaceae, Non-Enterobacteriaceae, Gram-Negative fastidious, Gram-Positive Aerobic, Anaerobic, Yeasts and Yeast-like that meet the document requirements were selected to evaluate, according to the in vitro performance verification of commercial instruments recommended by CLSI M52 standard [5]. Based on the gold standard of final results, the Agreement, Discrepant and No identification of the two mass spectrometers were calculated. The Agreement values of two mass spectrometers were more than 93%, the Discrepant were less than 3%, and No identification were less than 2% ( Figure 3, Table S3), and all of these were acceptable values.…”
