The first determination of the Planck constant with the joule balance NIM-2

Abstract: The National Institute of Metrology (NIM, China) proposed a joule balance method to measure the Planck constant in 2006, and built the first prototype NIM-1 to verify its principle with a relative uncertainty of 8.9 × 10 -6 by 2013. Since 2013, a new joule balance NIM-2 has been designed, with a series of improvements to reduce the measurement uncertainty. By April 2017, NIM-2 has been constructed and can be employed to measure the Planck constant in vacuum. A first measurement on NIM-2 yields a determination … Show more

“…The measurement data are summarised in Table 2. The noted scientific articles belong to CoP SI ≡ LMТI [23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. The values of absolute and relative uncertainties differ by more than a factor of 10.…”

“…The new kilogram will be realized using the Kibble balance [1], Joule balance [2] or x-ray crystal density (XRCD, Avogadro) experiments [3]. The nature of the Kibble balance, Joule balance and XRCD experiments that three methods will realize the kilogram in vacuum [4].…”

“…But at the highest accuracies available today, only two methods are competitive. The Kibble balance method and its variations like the Joule balance, all rely on the Josephson and quantum Hall effects to link to the Planck constant . The X‐ray crystal density (XRCD) method measures the microscopic lattice parameter with a combined X‐ray and optical technique to “count the atoms” in a near perfect sphere of silicon .…”
