The first amorphous and crystalline yttrium lactate: synthesis and structural features

Abstract: The synthesis and crystal structure of the first molecular yttrium lactate complex, Y(Lac)3(H2O)2, is reported, where the coordination sphere of yttrium is saturated with lactate ligands and water molecules, resulting in a neutral moiety.

“…It is appropriate to present the synthesis and crystal structure of the primary molecular complex of yttrium-lactate, Y(Lac)3(H2O)2, in which the yttrium coordination sphere is immersed with lactate ligands and water particles, coming about within the formation a unbiased linkage [46,47]. The reaction of yttrium chloride with lactic acid produces a white precipitate of yttrium lactate and represented in the Eq.…”

“…By increasing the contact time to 11 min., the extraction efficiency of dysprosium showed negligible effect to 99.2 %. This may be due to the fact that the transfer of dysprosium ion from the aqueous phase to the organic phase is saturated to form a complex at equilibrium [46]. Therefore, a contact time of 9 min., was considered the optimal value for the extraction of Dy from the leach liquor.…”

“…Among RE lactates, only a few compounds have been synthesized and characterized to date. Namely, crystal structures of 2D-layered cationic {[Ln(H 2 O) 2 Lact 2 ](ClO 4 )} ∞ (Ln = Eu, Tb) [42,43] and molecular [Y(H 2 O) 2 Lact 3 ] [44] compounds as well as mixed-ligand complexes of RE (L/D)-lactates with O-and N-donor ligands [45][46][47] have been reported. The main obstacle to the structural study of RE lactates lies in their tendency to form viscous supersaturated solutions or/and intergrown crystals rather than X-ray quality single crystals.…”

“…This feature can be illustrated on yttrium complexes with propionate and lactate ligands, which possess the same carbon chain structure while differing in the presence of an additional OH-group. Thus, yttrium propionate possesses a 2D-layered motif [18,48], whereas yttrium lactate exhibits a mononuclear structure, which is rather rare for RE carboxylates [44].…”
