“…The 8-vertex organometallic species that is most relevant to the cluster described in the present paper are [Ru 3 Pt 5 (CO) 12 (PBu t 3 ) 3 ] ( I ) and [Ru 6 (CO) 13 (μ-MeC 2 NMe 2 )(MeC 2 NMe 2 )(μ 4 -S) 2 ] ( II ), in which the platinum and ruthenium metal atoms occupy capping positions, respectively. A recently reported example was the 8-vertex monocarbon metallacarborane closo -[2,2-(Ph 3 P) 2 -2-H-3,6,8-(MeO) 3 -RuCB 6 H 4 ] ( III ), with a boron-capped pentagonal-bipyramidal cage geometry. As far as we are aware, cluster compounds 3 and 4 may thus be regarded as the first metallacarboranes containing a {Cp*M} fragment as a capping vertex in pentagonal-bipyramidal geometry.…”

“…Among these, closo -[B 5 H 4 PPh 3 {Fe(CO) 3 {Ir(CO) 2 PPh 3 }] is the first structurally characterized pentagonal-bipyramidal metallaborane in which the [Fe(CO) 3 ] 2+ vertex caps a formal nido -[B 5 H 4 (PPh 3 ){Ir(CO) 2 (PPh 3 )}] 2− unit. Similarly, the first boron-capped pentagonal-bipyramidal metallacarborane, [(Ph 3 P) 2 HRuCB 6 H 4 (OMe) 3 ], was isolated from the reaction of [ nido -B 10 H 12 CH] − Cs + with [RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 3 ] . More recently, Fehlner and co-workers have reported the bimetallacarborane [Cp*Ir(B 3 H 3 C 2 Me 2 ){Mo(CO) 3 }(μ-CO)], which also has similar geometry.…”

“…For example, first documented example of capped-pentagonal bipyramidal geometry was observed in metallophosphorous cluster [HRu 5 (CO) 10 (m 4 -PPh) 2 (m 3 -PPh)(m 2 -PPh 2 )]$ 0.5C 6 H 6 , A [33]. Similarly, the first boron-capped-pentagonal bipyramidal metallacarborane [(Ph 3 P) 2 HRuCB 6 H 4 (OMe) 3 ], B was isolated from the reaction of [nido-B 10 H 12 CH] À Cs þ with [RuCl 2 (PPh 3 ) 3 ] [34]. More recently, we have reported the first example of bicapped pentagonal bipyramidal metallaborane [(Cp*Ta) 2 B 5 H 7 {Fe(CO) 3 } 2 ], C with a deformed equatorial plane [35].…”
