The Fictitious Radius as a Tool for Fatigue Life Estimation of Notched Elements

Abstract: In this paper, the fictitious radius - according to Neuber’s method for determination of stresses at the notch root was used. Next, the fatigue lives of elements of the ring notches were calculated, and then compared with results of experimental tests of S235JR steel samples. However, the obtained fatigue lives did not bring satisfactory results. It has been demonstrated that the fictitious radius strongly depends on the expected fatigue life

“…5 This is why many authors use the method of fictitious radius for life estimations. 11,12 The purpose of the work is comparing results of experimental life for elements with ring-shaped notch, with computational life obtained with Neuber's fictitious radius method, demonstration of equivalent microstructural length variability with cycle number and proposition to consider the variability in fatigue life evaluation model. However, in the case of notched elements, where actual notch radius is bigger than zero, such approach does not provide good results.…”

“…Both the replacement value of the microstructural length and many other known lengths determining the fatigue zone are represented as constants by scientists. However, as demonstrated by, 25,27,28 this zone depends on the level and type of loading. This is an important observation, because stress calculations are usually performed for the elastic material model in some studies, and there is no clear determination of the number of cycles to crack initiation.…”
