The water-energy-food nexus has gained increasing attention in the research communities as the security of water, energy and food becomes a very high concern due to future uncertainties. Studies pertaining to calculations of flows and dependencies between different resources, assessments of technology and policy applications, and quantifications of system performance have been conducted to understand their interlinkages and develop management options. This paper provides a state-of-the-art review on the concepts, research questions and methodologies in the field of waterenergy-food. First, two types of nexus definition are compared and discussed to understand the nature of nexus research issues. Then, nexus research questions are summarized into three themes: internal relationship analysis, external impact analysis, and nexus system evaluation. Eight nexus modelling approaches are discussed in terms of their advantages, disadvantages and applications, and guidance is provided on the selection of an appropriate modelling approach. Finally, future research challenges are identified, including system boundary, data uncertainty and modelling, underlying mechanism of nexus issues and system performance evaluation. This review helps bring research efforts together to address the challenging questions in the nexus research and develop sustainable and resilient water, energy and food systems. 2 Highlights: 1. Abstract:This research aims to analyze the food-energy interactive nexus of sustainable urban plant factory systems. Plant factory systems grow agricultural products within artificially controlled growing environment and multi-layer vertical growing systems. The system controls the supply of light, temperature, humidity, nutrition, water, and carbon dioxide for growing plants. Plant factories are able to produce consistent and high-quality agricultural products within less production space for urban areas. The production systems use less labor, pesticide, water, and nutrition. However, food production of plant factories has many challenges including higher energy demand, energy costs, and installation costs of artificially controlled technologies. In the research, stochastic optimization model and linear complementarity models are formulated to conduct optimal and equilibrium food-energy analysis of plant factory production. A case study of plant factories in the Taiwanese market is presented.

The security of food-energy-water (FEW) systems is an issue of global concern, especially in megaurban regions (MURs) with high-density populations, industries and carbon emissions. To better understand the hidden links between urbanization and FEW systems, the pressure on FEW systems was quantified in a typical rapidly urbanizing region-the Bohai MUR. The correlations between urbanization indicators and the pressure on FEW systems were analyzed and the mechanism of the impact of urbanization on FEW systems was further investigated. The results showed that approximately 23% of cropland was lost, 61% of which was lost via conversion to construction land and urban areas expanded by 132.2% in the Bohai MUR during 1980-2015. The pressure on FEW systems showed an upward trend, with the stress index of the pressure on FEW systems (FEW_SI) ranging from 80.49% to 134.82%. The dominant pressure consisting of that has converted from water system pressure to energy system pressure since 2004. The FEW_SI in the Bohai MUR was enhanced with cropland loss and increases in urbanization indicators. Additionally, land use, populations, incomes, policies and innovation are the main ways that urbanization affects FEW systems in MURs. This study enhances our understanding of the variation in pressure on FEW systems in MURs and the effects of urbanization on FEW systems, which will help stakeholders to enhance the resilience of FEW systems and promote sustainable regional development.
