The ferns and lycophytes of Reserva Natural Guaricica, Antonina, Paraná, Brazil

Abstract: We found 204 species of pteridophytes in Reserva Natural Guaricica, a private natural heritage reserve (RPPN) in Antonina, Paraná, Brazil. With approximately 8,600 ha and elevations ranging from sea level to 600 m, RPPN Guaricica has more species of pteridophytes than any other area in Paraná. Ferns are represented by 194 species in 82 genera and 26 families, whereas lycophytes comprise 10 species in four genera and two families. The RPPN is the type locality of two recently described spe… Show more

“…The area of southeastern Bahia has been interpreted as a refuge (the called “Bahia refuge”) for forest biodiversity, since the area presented climatic stability, even during the driest climatic phases (at the LGM; Mori et al., 1983; Rocha et al., 2005; Carnaval and Moritz, 2008; Carnaval et al., 2009; Matos et al., 2010; Ribeiro et al., 2011; Coelho and Amorim, 2014; Ostroski et al., 2020; Rojas‐Padilla et al., 2020). This refuge would be located between the São Francisco and Doce rivers (Carnaval and Moritz, 2008; Hoffmeister and Ferrari, 2016; Menini‐Neto et al., 2016).…”

“…For ferns, Matos et al. (2010) suggested connections between southeastern Bahia and the mountains of south and southeastern Brazil. This can be seen in the species Adiantopsis alata (occuring in southeast Bahia, Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo states), Adiantum discolour and A. tetragonum (both in southeastern Bahia and Espírito Santo states), and Pteris limae (southeastern Bahia, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro states).…”

“…Data from other reserves in the Mata Atlântica of São Paulo, Costa Rica, and Ecuador, were provided by the reserves. Data from Serra Bonita are from Matos et al (2010). Data for the Perú sites are from nearby San Ramón (https://en.climatedata.org/south-america/peru/junin/san-ramon-28556/).…”

“…With the exception of Schneider and Schmitt (2011), few studies have analyzed the vertical distribution of epiphytes on tree ferns, which limits our knowledge of how distinct strata and height affect the patterns of epiphytic distribution in this group of hosts. Even though all ecological categories of epiphytes may be found on tree ferns (Blum et al, 2011), quantitative studies about epiphytes on these hosts are uncommon in the subtropical Atlantic Forest, with only a few published records (Gasper & Sevegnani, 2010; Matos et al, 2020; Schmitt et al, 2005; Schmitt & Windisch, 2010; Schneider & Schmitt, 2011). Even more uncommon are studies that characterize accidental epiphytism in (sub)tropical forests.…”
