The FEM model of groundwater circulation in the vicinity of the Świniarsko intake, near Nowy Sącz (Poland)

Abstract: Modern hydrogeological research uses numerical modelling, which is most often based on the finite difference method (FDM) or finite element method (FEM). The present paper discusses an example of application of the less frequently used FEM for simulating groundwater circulation in the vicinity of the intake at Świniarsko near Nowy Sącz. The research area is bordered by rivers and watersheds, and within it, two well-connected aquifers occur (Quaternary gravelly-sandy sediments and Paleogene cracked flysch rocks… Show more

“…The above considerations indicate that it is important to optimize the amount of water abstracted from the well or distribute the water abstraction amount between individual wells in a multiwell field under nitrogen fertilization optimization to protect well fields against a high risk resulting in their closure (Salcedo-Sanchez et al 2013;Zdechlik and Kałuża 2019). Ghandi and Roozbahani (2020) presented how the risk to the drinking water supply can be managed under critical conditions if it is impossible to avoid these conditions.…”

“…The above considerations indicate that it is important to optimize the amount of water abstracted from the well or distribute water abstraction between individual wells in a multi-well field as well as to optimize nitrogen fertilization in order to protect well fields against high risk resulting in their closure (Salcedo-Sanchez et al 2013;Zdechlik and Kałuża 2019).…”

“…An overview of the software used to model filtration processes and contaminant migration in groundwater is presented by Zdechlik (2016) and Pietrzak (2021), among others. Examples of the application of different model methods for the same research area are presented by Zdechlik & Morański (2017) and Zdechlik & Kałuża (2019). The use of FDM/FEM requires the creation of a numerical model of all or part of the aquifer structure under consideration.…”
