“…This, however, differs if the prediction and the ascending sensorimotor signals are incongruent (asynchronous stimulation), leading to reduced attenuation of these incoming signals, and ultimately the action being attributed to an external agent or presence (Heinks-Maldonado et al, 2005; Shergill et al, 2003). We further hypothesize that this process of disrupting motor control, in line with the sensorimotor mismatch hypothesis (Barnby et al, 2023a; Blanke et al, 2014; Case et al, 2020), may mimic what naturally occurs in some patients with PH (Arzy et al, 2006; Blanke et al, 2003; Brugger et al, 1997). In fact, Bernasconi and colleagues presented compelling evidence that this setup mimics many phenomenological characteristics of actual symptomatic hallucination, by identifying a group of Parkinson’s disease patients suffering from symptomatic PH, who were more sensitive to riPH than patients without symptomatic PH (specifically in the asynchronous condition), and who likened the riPH to the symptomatic one experience in daily life (Bernasconi et al, 2021).…”
