The feasibility of goal attainment scaling to measure case resolution in elder abuse and neglect adult protective services intervention

Abstract: Objectives: This pilot study describes implementation procedures of goal attainment scaling (GAS) and examines the feasibility of using GAS to measure the multifarious intervention outcome of case resolution in elder mistreatment (EM) adult protective services (APS).Methods: Substantiated EM victims (n = 27) were recruited prospectively from the State of Maine APS. An adapted GAS approach was implemented involving development of a prepopulated goal scale menu and web-based GAS application. Results: The GAS menu… Show more

“…Considering barriers to implementation, providers in our study mentioned longer encounter times due to GAS, which improved with time but still increased the length of the care visit. Previous research has explored simplified approaches to GAS, including pre-worded goals and 3-point scaling [ 24 , 33 ]. Time added to the encounter and provider buy-in for this approach need to be addressed moving forward, since longer encounter time often reduces provider revenue in the fee-for-service health care system.…”

“…GAS scales are uniquely developed for each individual and can therefore readily accommodate cultural differences between generations, geographic locations, and socioeconomic status. Although simplified and menu-facilitated GAS has been shown to be feasible in several conditions [30,37,38,41,57], further work is needed to assess the responsiveness, feasibility and validity of the DS-AD menu in this population. To do so, the next step in this process is to evaluate GAS facilitated by this menu in a feasibility study or as an exploratory outcome measure in adults living with DS-AD.…”

“…These issues are often addressed through training programs designed for clinicians administering GAS [34,36]. A complementary approach develops condition-specific goal menus to facilitate goal setting by patients, their caregivers and/or clinicians [30,37,38].…”
