“…Skeletal remains reported as those of early dogs derived from early archeological contexts (dating from approximately 9000-14,000 years ago) are scattered in different regions, from the Middle East (Davis & Valla, 1978;Turnbull & Reed, 1974) to central and northern Europe (Benecke, 1987;Degerbol, 1961;Morey, 1992;Nobis, 1981) and into North America (Grayson, 1984). “…However, uncontested dog remains date from considerably later in time. Two candidates for the earliest dog, both potentially dated to c. 14,000 years ago, are a single jaw fragment from Germany (Koop et al 2000) and specimens from Palegawra in Iraq (Turnbull & Reed 1974; but see Uerpmann (1982) who regarded the age of the Palegawra specimens to be closer to 8,000 years). The earliest uncontested dogs from Southwest Asia are 9,000 years old (Wayne & O'Brien 1987;Goebel 1999) and claims of terminal Pleistocene dogs are based on non-diagnostic material (Leonard et al 2002).…”

“…The dog (Canis familiaris), is the oldest domestic animal, originally domesticated in the pre-agricultural age between 14,000 and 12,000 years ago (Turnbell and Reed, 1974;Tanabe et al, 1991). The dogs are one of the most diverse domestic species.…”
