The media industry is currently being pulled in the often-opposing\ud directions of increased realism (high resolution, stereoscopic,\ud large screen) and personalization (selection and control of\ud content, availability on many devices). We investigate the\ud feasibility of an end-to-end format-agnostic approach to support\ud both these trends. In this paper, different aspects of a format-\ud agnostic capture, production, delivery and rendering system are\ud discussed. At the capture stage, the concept of layered scene\ud representation is introduced, including panoramic video and 3D\ud audio capture. At the analysis stage, a virtual director component\ud is discussed that allows for automatic execution of\ud cinematographic principles, using feature tracking and saliency\ud detection. At the delivery stage, resolution-independent\ud audiovisual transport mechanisms for both managed and\ud unmanaged networks are treated. In the rendering stage, a\ud rendering process that includes the manipulation of audiovisual\ud content to match the connected display and loudspeaker properties\ud is introduced. This thesis investigates several aspects of Virtual Director technology, i.e. software capable of intelligent real-time selection of live media streams. It addresses several research questions in this interdisciplinary field with respect to how a generic Virtual Director framework can be constructed, and how its behavior can be modeled and formalized to realize professional applications with many parallel users within real-time constraints. Prototypes have been built for the applications of group videoconferencing and live event broadcast. The engine executes cinematic principles aiming to enhance the user experience. In group videoconferencing, a Virtual Director aims to support communication goals by selecting from multiple available streams, i.e. automating cuts between shots according to the communication situation. In event broadcast, it enables personalization by framing, animating and cutting virtual camera views as cropping from a high-resolution panorama. While the technical approach and framework has been evaluated in lab experiments, further evaluation involving potential users and cinematic professionals is ongoing.

The Production Scripting Engine (PSE) is a Virtual Director software automatically selecting and framing camera shots in an interactive live broadcast production system. It is informed through various channels, some of which send a low-level event stream. The decision making process is distributed along a chain over the production and delivery networks, and the concrete amount of PSE instances depends on the actual production.
