The Famatinian magmatic arc in the central Sierras Pampeanas: an Early to Mid-Ordovician continental arc on the Gondwana margin

Abstract: A new multi-disciplinary study of the central Sierras Pampeanas encompasses fieldwork, petrography, metamorphic and micro-structural analysis, geochemistry and geochronology. Remnants of a low-to-medium grade metasedimentary sequence, which also occurs in the Sierras de Córdoba to the east, are considered regionally equivalent to the Puncoviscana Formation; a ?mid-Cambrian Rb-Sr whole-rock isochron of 513 ± 31 Ma probably dates their main metamorphism. The predominant granitoids of the Los Llanos-Ulapes bathol… Show more

“…The two rhyolite samples from Cazadero Grande presented by Martina et al (2011), as the Carboniferous Eastern Sierras Pampeanas granites show geochemical affinities with Las Lozas rhyolites in the Y versus Nb and Y+Nb versus Rb tectonic discrimination diagrams (Pearce et al, 1984) plotting in the within plate granites field (Fig. 9) Pankhurst et al (1998), Dahlquist and Galindo (2004), Dahlquist et al (2010), Martina et al (2011 (Dahlquist et al,2010). The last two magma types were probably extracted from a strongly enriched reservoir with negligible mantle contributions.…”

“…In the Sierra de Chepes, an early to middle Cambrian metamorphism was proposed by Pankhurst et al (1998) based on an Rb-Sr errorchron of 513 ± 31 Ma. Banded schist from the Sierras de Chepes yielded detrital ages between 540 and 511 Ma with an average of 525 Ma (Drobe et al 2010 this volume).…”

“…The composition of VEL-60 17 is very similar to those of granitoids in the Sierra de Zapata of Carboniferous age, which have been interpreted as the last phase of within-plate magmatism (Rapela et al, 1996). Based on these characteristics, VEL-6017 can be distinguished chemically from the ca1c-alkaline granitoids of Ordovician age generated during the Famatinian Orogeny (see Pankhurst et al , 1998;Dahlquist, 2000;Dahlquist et al, 2005, and references therein).…”
