“…The fact that 02 breathing reduces myocardial contractile force has been shown repeatedly in experimental animals ( 'Ishikawa et al 1974b) as well as in clinical patients with ischemic myocardium (Ishikawa et al 1974c), although effects of 02 on myocardial contractile force is rather complicated (Ishikawa et al 1983). Since myocardial contractile force is one of the major determinants of myocardial 02 consumption (Sonnenblick et al 1968), a decrease in myocardial contractile force in the ischemic myocardium will also reduce myocardial ischemia.…”
