The Extremely Metal‐poor, Neutron Capture–rich Star CS 22892‐052: A Comprehensive Abundance Analysis

Abstract: High-resolution spectra obtained with three ground-based facilities and the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have been combined to produce a new abundance analysis of CS 22892-052, an extremely metal-poor giant with large relative enhancements of neutron capture elements. A revised model stellar atmosphere has been derived with the aid of a large number of Fe peak transitions, including both neutral and ionized species of six elements. Several elements, including Mo, Lu, Au, Pt, and Pb, have been detected for the … Show more

“…Much more extensive work on low-metallicity halo stars (cf. [144] [145] [146]) showed that Fe-group and other nuclei with A < 130 were fully decoupled from heavy r-process nucleosynthesis (including U and Th) [147] [148]. This then requires that those SNe II that may be the site of a heavy rprocess must have masses 8M ⊙ ≤ M ≤ 11M ⊙ (with small envelopes).…”

“…While Ba and heavier elements seem to fit the solar r-process pattern, lighter elements show wide varieties (e.g., Hill et al 2002, Sneden et al 2003. In particular, a large dispersion has been found in [Sr/Ba] at low metallicity (e.g., Ryan, Norris, & Beers 490 Ishimaru et al 1996, Honda et al 2004 fig.…”
