The Extracts of Epilobium Parviflorum Inhibit MCF-7 Breast Cancer Cells

Abstract: Background: Traditional medicine is inspiring in drug development research. Epilobium parviflorum extracts have shown promising therapeutic effects on prostate cancer cells. The similarities between breast and prostate cancers at molecular and metabolic levels prompted us to explore its effects on human breast cancer. Methods: The root, aerial parts and flowers of the plant were, collected and dried separately at ambient temperature and away from direct sunlight. The aquatic and methanolic extracts of each par… Show more

“…Many cell viability studies using MTT assay provided evidence that anticancer properties reside in various plants such as the IC 50 value of Elaeis guineensis, Carthamus tenuis, Hyptis pectinata and Epilobium parviflorum is 15µg/ml, 25µg/ml, 46µg/ml, 73µg/ml, respectively. [13][14][15][16] Likewise, in the present investigation, IC 50 value of I. verum extract was found to be 5.5 ± 0.9µg/ml which caused significant reduction in MCF-7 cells viability, indicating its anticancer activity in a dosedependent manner (Table-I).…”

“…The results obtained by Hatefi Kia et al in the experiments on normal (HEK293) and cancer (MCF7) cells proved high antiproliferative selective activity against tumor cells. Interestingly, methanolic extracts were more active than aqueous; moreover, the methanolic extracts derived from the plant roots were more active (IC 50 = 73 μg/mL) than those from the flowers and aerial parts (IC 50 equal 110 μg/mL and 160 μg/mL, respectively) [ 98 ]. Similarly, different activity between normal and cancer cells were observed in the human colon adenocarcinoma cell line (HT-29) and human colon epithelial cell line (CCD 841 CoTr) after their 96-h treatment with in vitro digested fireweed extract.…”

“…is a well-known medicinal plant that grows naturally in many locations in the world, mainly in North America, Asia, and Europe ( Lin et al, 2022 ; Dreger et al, 2020 ) ( Kalle et al, 2020 ). The plant has well-known anti-inflammatory ( Ferrante et al, 2020 ) ( Nowak et al, 2021c ; Zagórska-Dziok et al, 2021 ), antibacterial, anticancer ( Kia et al, 2021 ; Ostrovska et al, 2017 ; Kowalik et al, 2022 ) ( Maruška et al, 2017 ) and antioxidant properties ( Lasinskas et al, 2020 ) ( Nowak et al, 2019 ; Karakaya et al, 2020 ). Traditionally, the leaves infusion of this plant is used as a remedy for headaches, colds, gastrointestinal and prostate disorders ( Lasinskas et al, 2020 ).…”
