The Extraction of Cr(VI) by a Flat Sheet Supported Liquid Membrane Using Alamine 336 as a Carrier

Abstract: Chromium compounds have received considerable attention because they have been used extensively in such industrial applications as electro-plating, steelmaking, tanning of leather goods, and as corrosion inhibitors. The use of flat sheet supported liquid membranes (FSSLMs) to remove metals from wastewaters has been actively undertaken by both the scientific and industrial communities. The present work deals with carrier-facilitated membrane transport of Cr(VI) from acidic media across a FSSLM using the organic… Show more

“…In highly acidic conditions (at pH < 0.5), chromium is rapidly protonated by hydronium ions and a stable chromic acid H2Cr2O7 is formed. However, the chromic acid formation in the aqueous phase is not the desired situation during the chromium extraction process as the extraction of Cr(VI) ions decreases and thereby the flux and the permeability also decrease [62,63]. Therefore, the solution with pH = 1 was chosen in the present study.…”

“…Under the optimum conditions chromium(VI) recovery from real plating wastewater was tested and found to be satisfactory with a flux value of 1.4 × 10 -3 (mol.cm -2 .s -1 ). Eyupoglu et al [35] have dealt with extraction of Cr(VI) by a flat sheet SLM using Alamine 336 as a carrier and calculated the permeation coefficient as 7.88 × 10 −6 (m.s −1 ). Alguacil et al [36] has studied the transport of chromium(VI) through a Cyanex 923-xylene flat-sheet SLM.…”

“…So, the mildly acidic conditions are handier for these purposes. Taken into consideration of this phenomenon for aqueous species of chromium, chromium‐containing feed phase was adjusted to the mild acidic condition and the stripping phase was adjusted to the necessary requirements to neutralize the protonated imidazolium‐based RTILs like as our previous study .…”
