The Extent of the Impact of a Fluorochemical Industrial Park in Eastern China on Adjacent Rural Areas

Abstract: High levels of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were observed in rural areas near a fluorochemical industrial park (FCIP) in the Yangtze River Delta region. The concentrations of total PFAS (∑PFASs) in soil, surface water, groundwater, and rainwater were in the range of 0.6-64.6 ng/g dry weight, 15.6-480.9, 4.8-614.6, and 13.4-542.2 ng/L, respectively. PFASs in rainwater and groundwater were higher than in surface water. The influence of the FCIP on rural soils extended to a distance of approximately 4 km bas… Show more

“…The dominance of PFOA in soils was similar to a study by Filipovic et al (2015b) in which the relative contribution of PFOA in the soil, polluted due to historical usage of aqueous film forming foam, was higher than the one of PFHxA. PFOA was also the dominant PFCA in soils, collected near a fluorochemical industrial park in eastern China (Lu et al, 2018).…”

“…The PFSA concentrations were higher than the PFCA concentrations in Europe (Rankin et al, 2016), which is in agreement with our results, as PFOS concentrations were much higher than those of any other analyte. The PFOA concentrations in the soil (62.5 ng/g) collected from a fluorochemical industrial park in China (Lu et al, 2018) were higher than those at 3M in Antwerp.…”

“…These concentrations are within the range of those reported in other international studies. The PFBA concentrations in surface soil near a fluorochemical park in China (0.6 ng g -1 dw, Lu et al, 2018) were similar to those observed at Vlietbos, but lower than those observed at Middenvijver-Rot and Burchtse Weel. The PFOA (50.1 ng g -1 dw) and PFOS (2583 ng g -1 dw) concentrations at a fluorochemical manufacturing facility in Wuhan, China were higher than those reported in the present study at 3M, whereas the concentrations of PFOA (0.79 ng g -1 dw) and PFOS (7.06 ng g -1 dw) near a fluorochemical plant in Hubei Province, China were similar (Wang et al, 2010).…”

“…As a consequence of these major sources of PFAS, these compounds are almost ubiquitously detected in the environment (Xiao et al, 2015;Lu et al, 2018). Research has indicated that soil organic carbon content is the dominant solid-phase parameter which affects the adsorption of PFAS.…”
