The Expression of Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) and a Putative ABC Transporter Permease Is Inversely Correlated during Biofilm Formation in Listeria monocytogenes 4b G

Abstract: Little is known about the molecular basis of biofilm formation in Listeria monocytogenes. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) of the deletion mutant of lm.G_1771 gene, which encodes for a putative ABC transporter permease, is highly expressed in biofilm. In this study, the sod gene deletion mutant Δsod, and double deletion mutant of the sod and lm. G_1771 genes Δ1771Δsod were used to investigate the role of SOD and its relationship to the expression of the putative ABC transporter permease in biofilm formation. Our… Show more

“…L. monocytogenes has two ABC transporters with significant sequence homology to these proteins: AnrAB and the putative transporter encoded by lmo1746-lmo1747. Previous studies have identified lm.G_1771, an ABC transporter permease in L. monocytogenes serotype 4b strain G that is identical to lmo1746, and found that lm.G_1771 had a role in the regulation of biofilm formation (27,28). Further microarray analyses indicated that the product of lm.G_1771 regulates the transcription of anrAB and dltABCD, members of the VirR regulon (29).…”

“…It has been reported that ROS is associated with the reduction in the amount of bio film formation (Suo et al, 2012). It was also suggested that the formation of bio films and the secretion of extracellular polysaccharides are also part of the ROS defense strategies of L. ferriphilum (Bellenberg et al, 2014).…”

“…A study that observed filaments in biofilms formed by certain strains of L. monocytogenes argued that these filaments were probably flagella, because they were not observed in nonmotile strains of L. monocytogenes (111). Some studies (98,112) suggest that B plays a role in establishing Listeria attachment communities. For example, van der Veen and Abee (98) showed differential sigB expression in L. monocytogenes strain EGD-e during growth on surfaces.…”
