The Expression of ST2 Gene in Helper T Cells and the Binding of ST2 Protein to Myeloma-Derived RPMI8226 Cells

Abstract: The ST2 gene, which is specifically induced by growth stimulation, encodes interleukin-1 receptor-related proteins. Using the RT-PCR method, we found that the ST2 gene was broadly expressed in hematopoietic cell lines. It was also expressed specifically in helper T cell lines among lymphocytic cell lines. We analyzed the expression of ST2 in mouse helper T cell subsets with Northern blotting analysis. Mouse Th1 cell lines so far studied did not express ST2 mRNAs. On the other hand, one of the Th2 cell lines, D… Show more

“…ST2L expresses on mast cells, macrophages and exclusively on Type 2 T-helper cells [133][134][135][136][137][138][139][140]. Upon binding to ST2L, IL-33 is capable of stimulating the Th2 immune response and cytokine production [141][142][143][144].…”

“…The expression of the three forms has been detected in various human tissues and cells, including hematopoietic and endothelial cells [25]. ST2L has been proposed as a marker for Th2 CD4+ T cells since it is selectively expressed on Th2 but not on Th1 CD4+ T cells [26,27] and might be involved in the effector phase of Th2 immune responses [28]. Expression of sST2 protein can be induced in vitro by pro-inflammatory stimuli, like lipo-polysaccaride (LPS), IL-1β, TNF-α and IL-6 in human and murine inflammatory models [25,29].…”

“…It was subsequently found to be expressed by mast cells (4) and by Th2, but not Th1, cells (5)(6)(7). Although ST2/T1 is a member of the IL-1R family, it does not bind IL-1␣, IL-1␤, or IL-1R antagonist (8,9).…”
