The expressibility of languages and relations by word equations

Abstract: Classically, several properties and relations of words, such as "being a power of the same word", can be expressed by using word equations. This paper is devoted to a general study of the expressive power of word equations. As main results we prove theorems which allow us to show that certain properties of words are not expressible as components of solutions of word equations. In particular, "the primitiveness" and "the equal length" are such properties, as well as being "any word over a proper subalphabet". k… Show more

“…I used in this paper two of his ideas. The first one was to use several words instead of one in the definition of F Q -factorization, see Karhumaeki et al [2000]. The second idea was to use context in the definition of a synchronizing factorization.…”

“…The only existing tools to decide whether a language or relation is not expressible were introduced in [2,5,6]. There is almost nothing known about general case when the formula need not to be existential.…”

“…The class of expressible languages is incomparable with most classes occuring in the litterature like D0L languages, regular languages or context-free languages [5]. We consider another natural class of relations -the class of relations defined by length constraints only.…”
