Background More than half of pregnancies in Uganda are unintended, and nearly a third of these end in abortion. However, little research has focused on women living with HIV’s subjective experiences following induced abortion. We explored how women living with HIV subjectively experience induced abortions in health facilities in Lira District, Uganda. Materials and Methods This was a descriptive-phenomenological study between October and November 2022. The study was conducted among women of reproductive age (15–49 years) who were HIV positive and had undergone induced abortion following an unintended pregnancy. Purposive sampling was used to sample 30 participants who could speak to the research aims and have experience with the phenomenon under scrutiny. The principle of information power was used to estimate the sample size. We conducted face-to-face, in-depth interviews to collect data. Data were presented as direct quotes while providing a contextual understanding of the lived experiences of the study participants. Results The results showed that the major causes of induced abortion were financial constraints, concern for the unborn babies, unplanned pregnancy, and complex relationships. Regarding induced abortion-related experiences, three themes emerged: loss of family support, internalized and perceived stigma, and feelings of guilt and regret. Conclusion This study highlights the lived experiences of women living with HIV following an induced abortion. The study shows that women living with HIV had induced abortions due to numerous reasons, including financial concerns, complicated relationships, and a fear of infecting their unborn babies. However, after induced abortion, the women living with HIV faced several challenges like loss of family support, stigma, and feelings of guilt and regret. Based on HIV-infected women who underwent induced abortion and an unexpected pregnancy, they may need mental health services to reduce the stigma associated with induced abortion.

Background: Perinatal depression manifests during or after pregnancy, with prenatal depression occurring during pregnancy. Traditionally, research has focused more on postpartum depression, with less attention on prenatal depression among teenagers. Objective: This study aims to examine the correlates of prenatal depression among teenage pregnant women aged 13 to 17 and to explore the relationship between these factors and depression. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at a university teaching hospital and a rural health facility, involving 105 pregnant teenagers. Initial screenings to assess depression were performed using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, complemented by psychosocial evaluations with the Perceived Stress Scale and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS version 20, employing both descriptive and inferential statistical methods to interpret the findings. Results: Significant factors influencing prenatal depression included attempts to abort, stress, social support, household income, education level, and marital status. Logistic regression confirmed the significance of these correlates. Conclusion: Multiple factors influence prenatal depression in teenage pregnant women. The findings highlight the need for targeted preventive care and early interventions by medical professionals to improve health outcomes for mothers and infants.

Background: Terminating a pregnancy can be a traumatic life event, resulting in negative emotions that can diminish women’s self-worth. Support from different sources, including health support groups, could be beneficial in restoring a woman’s self-worth. This article aimed to present findings on the impact of a support group intervention on the self-worth of women who terminated a pregnancy in adolescence.Methods: A qualitative, exploratory and descriptive approach, using in-depth, semi-structured interviews, was used to collect data. Thematic analysis guided the data analysis.Results: Five themes emerged from the data: reasons for joining the support group; enhanced emotional and physical wellbeing; self-forgiveness; spiritual growth and participants’ voices.Conclusion: Participants described why they needed to join the support group. It became clear that the intercession was effective in the short term as it enhanced participants’ self-worth by encouraging them to accept themselves thereby altering their self-condemning emotions, replacing them with self-love.Contribution: The study recommends that a support group should be considered as a backup for women who terminated a pregnancy and have lost their self-worth.
