Objectives: This study aims to understand the current state of regional healthcare services and explore the role of public health doctors of Korean medicine (PHDKMs) in addressing healthcare disparities.Methods: An online survey was conducted among 951 PHDKMs registered with the Korean Public Health Korean Medicine Doctors Association from July 15 to July 19, 2024. A total of 266 responses were collected, and after removing 2 insincere responses, 264 responses were used for analysis. The survey included questions on the provision of healthcare services and the role of PHDKMs in local healthcare crisis.Results: Out of 264 responses, 85 community health centers and branches (32.2%) lacked public health doctors (PHDs). The traveling clinics were the most common alternative in these cases. Centers without PHDs received 46 complaints (54.1%) about healthcare gaps, while centers with PHDs received 70 complaints (39.1%), showing statistically significant differences. The most common complaints involved consultation and management of chronic elderly diseases. PHDKMs reported being capable of providing musculoskeletal and internal medicine treatments, but identified a need for improvement in emergency response, basic and inflammatory treatments, consultation and management of chronic elderly diseases, administration of medications, and vaccinations. They expressed a high willingness and perceived capability to perform minor medical tasks.Conclusion: The decline in PHDs is adversely affecting regional healthcare. PHDKMs can help address these gaps through expanded roles and additional training. Policymakers should consider better integrating PHDKMs into the public healthcare system to ensure continuous and comprehensive healthcare services in underserved areas.

BACKGROUND: Smart glass technology offers remote interaction between health professionals for telehealth, alleviating healthcare disparities in isolated areas. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the professionals’ perceptions of smart glass technology as a tool for telehealth and distance learning. METHOD: This mixed-method study on health professionals in 10 different island areas in Korea involved participants experiencing a smart glass-based telehealth system using the scenario of clinical consultation with remote specialists. A group pre- and post-test design was used to examine the change in attitude and perceived importance among health professionals about using smart glasses in telehealth. RESULTS: Forty-seven participants completed both pre-and post-evaluation of smart glasses. A positive, statistically significant change in participants’ perceptions of smart glasses regarding their implications for telehealth and distance learning (p< 0.05) was found. Fifty-one health workers provided feedback on smart glasses, and a majority expressed their expectations of quality care with telehealth using advanced technology. The main concerns were patients’ privacy issues and inadequate technology for seamless application. CONCLUSION: The incorporation of smart glass technology offers great potential to enrich telehealth as well as distance learning for unskilled health professionals in isolated areas. Future studies are needed to increase efforts to secure a high level of acceptance for clinical consultation with remote specialists on this newly developed device.
Purpose: Anaphylaxis is life-threatening, so early recognition and proper response are critical. This study evaluated the awareness of anaphylaxis in Korean community including teachers, 119 rescue team, and doctors in public service. Methods: A questionnaire of anonymously structured 9 items about anaphylaxis was administered to the teachers working in kindergartens or elementary schools, 119 rescue team, and public health physicians in Gangwon province in 2017. Additional questionnaire about knowledge on anaphylaxis management was administered to the physicians. Results: A total of 415 people participated in the survey. About 4% of child care and health teachers experienced anaphylaxis within 1 year, but the overall awareness of anaphylaxis was very low, regardless of the educational level of anaphylaxis. 119 rescue teams experienced more anaphylactic patients, but they lacked knowledge of epinephrine administration and epinephrine autoinjector (EAI), independent of the educational level of anaphylaxis. Public health physicians had good knowledge of early treatment for anaphylaxis, but there was a lack of knowledge for epinephrine injection sites, observation plan, and EAI. Conclusion: The awareness of anaphylaxis among community and emergency responders seems likely to be inadequate. Systematic and continuous education by anaphylaxis specialists is necessary for community health care providers.
