Context: Ziziphus mistol (mistol) fruits and their derivate product (arrope) have been traditionally used as food and in folk medicine for the treatment of a wide variety of diseases including bronchopulmonary disorder. Objective: The objective of this study is to evaluate the antitussive and expectorant effects of Z. mistol ethanol extract (EE), aqueous extract (AE) and arrope (Ar). Materials and Methods: The antitussive activity was evaluated using two models against ammonia and citric acid induced cough in rats. The expectorant activity was evaluated by volume of phenol red secretion in rats' tracheas. The tested doses of extracts were of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg, (p.o.). Results: The aqueous extract and arrope showed the highest activity in all tested models. The arrope, at 1000 mg / kg, proved to be more effective with inhibitions of 79.69% and 93.75% in the number of coughs induced by ammonium liqueur and citric acid, respectively, while it was similar to codeine. Expectorant activity showed an 87.73% increase in red phenol secretion at the same dose, evidencing a higher activity compared to that of other extracts and similar to that of bromhexine. Discussion and Conclusions: This study has shown that EE, AE and Ar, have significant antitussive and expectorant effects. The present results validate their popular use to treat some pathology that affects the respiratory system. Thus, mistol fruits, mainly arrope, are proposed, as excellent phytopharmaco.

Context: Geoffroea decorticans (chañar) fruits and its derivate product (arrope) have been traditionally used as food and in folk medicine for the treatment of a wide variety of diseases including bronchopulmonary disorder. Objective:The objective of this study is to evaluate the antitussive, expectorant and anti-inflammatory effects and safety of aqueous extract (AE) and arrope (Ar) of chañar. Materials and methods:The anti-inflammatory activity of AE and Ar was evaluated through carrageenan induced edema and cotton pellet-induced granuloma formation in rats. The antitussive activity was evaluated using model against ammonia induced cough in rats. The expectorant activity was evaluated by volume of phenol red in rat's tracheas. The tested doses of extracts were of 250, 500 and 1000 mg/kg, (p.o.). For the safety evaluation of AE and Ar, was conducted the subchronic toxicity test in rats (1 g/kg and 2 g/kg, p.o.). Results:The results showed that AE (1000 mg/Kg) significantly reduced the edema (100%) induced by carrageenan 3 h post-dosing and granuloma formation (47.76%) induced by cotton pellets. In the ammonia liquor induced cough and the amount of phenol red secretion, AE and Ar of chañar (1000 mg/kg) significantly enhanced the latent period of cough, inhibited the cough frequency and significantly enhance tracheal phenol red compared with that negative control. The result of toxicity assays suggested that AE and Ar did not induce or cause any damage to the liver and kidney of the rats and can be considered nontoxic for these animals at tested doses. Discussion and conclusion:This study has shown that the AE and Ar possess antitussive and expectorant significant effect. Also AE possess significant anti-inflammatory effects, both extracts were nontoxic. These findings seem to justify use of the plant in traditional medicine and are proposed, the chañar fruits as an excellent nutraceutical.

Cladonia verticillaris lichen lectin (ClaveLL) was purified using a previously established protocol and then evaluated for its potential antimicrobial activity. Initially, the autochthonous lichen was submitted to extraction with sodium phosphate buffer pH 7.0, followed by filtration and centrifugation to obtain crude extract. A salt fractionation was performed with 30% ammonium sulfate. After centrifugation, the protein fraction was loaded onto molecular exclusion chromatography using Sephadex G-100 matrix to purify active lectin. ClaveLL showed antibacterial activity against Gram-positive (Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterococcus faecalis) and Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) assayed strains, with greater inhibitory effect on growth of E. coli (MIC of 7.18 g mL −1 ). The lowest minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC, 57.4 g mL −1 ) was detected against E. faecalis. The antifungal assay performed with Trichophyton mentagrophytes, Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton rubrum, Trichosporon cutaneum, and Trichosporon asahi evaluated crude extract, fraction, and ClaveLL preparations. ClaveLL was the most active against T. rubrum with an inhibition percentage of 35% compared to negative control (phosphate buffer). Extract and fraction showed better activity on growth inhibition of T. mentagrophytes (35%). The results indicate the potential of ClaveLL and other C. verticillaris preparations as antimicrobial agents useful for applications focusing on human health.
