The Expanded Core Curriculum Areas Experienced by Campers during Camp Abilities: A Qualitative Study

Abstract: Introduction: The expanded core curriculum (ECC) refers to the generally accepted nine areas of instruction that children who are visually impaired (i.e., those who are blind or have low vision) must learn through explicit instruction in order to live independently as adults. Children with visual impairments must experience immersion in the ECC in their daily lives throughout the year rather than only being taught these skills during the school year by teachers of students with visual impairments. “…Third, it is important to recognize that a theme of self-determination emerged from this study with three subthemes: autonomy, competence, and self-advocacy. Self-determination and socialization are both components of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC) which were also found to improve across a one-week in-person sports camp for youth who are visually impaired [ 24 ]. “…Practicum experiences have also been shown to benefit youth with visual impairments. Lieberman and colleagues [ 24 ] studied the effect of a one-week sports camp on engagement in the nine components of the Expanded Core Curriculum (ECC), including self-determination and socialization. They found that a one-week educational sports and recreation program promoted engagement in all nine areas of the ECC multiple times and in multiple settings in the camp.…”

“…These nine skill areas encompass assistive technology (AT); career education; compensatory skills; independent living; orientation and mobility (O&M); recreation and leisure; self-determination; sensory efficiency skills; and social interaction. A study conducted by Lieberman et al [ 10 ] indicated that engagement in physical activity promoted all nine components of the ECC skill development. This research is compelling, although there has been limited research in the area of youths with visual impairments and outdoor adventure to date.…”

“…The expansion of experiences in all areas of the ECC complements and improves on the foundation of self-determination. This improvement is accomplished by enhancing the student's ability to be more independent, autonomous, social, active, and sensory efficient from the added opportunities (Lieberman et al, 2021).…”

“…Although scarce, preliminary evidence suggests that students with visual impairments will likely benefit from specific instruction in areas of the ECC outside of school. Thus, discovering ways in which a community provides supportive opportunities to facilitate components of the ECC may be very beneficial for improving service delivery in the ECC areas to students (Lieberman et al, 2021).…”
