The Existence and Localization of Nuclear snoRNAs in Arabidopsis thaliana Revisited

Abstract: Ribosome biogenesis is one cell function-defining process. It depends on efficient transcription of rDNAs in the nucleolus as well as on the cytosolic synthesis of ribosomal proteins. For newly transcribed rRNA modification and ribosomal protein assembly, so-called small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) and ribosome biogenesis factors (RBFs) are required. For both, an inventory was established for model systems like yeast and humans. For plants, many assignments are based on predictions. Here, RNA deep sequencing afte… Show more

“…138 C/D snoRNA in the FIB2-IP fraction were also detected among 154 C/D snoRNA recently reported in a nuclear fraction from Arabidopsis cell suspension culture [59]. However, 16 others C/D snoRNAs detected in the nuclear fraction were not found to be associated to FIB2 in our conditions (Table S2).…”

“…The association between the decline in snoRNAs and fruit senescence suggests that these two events are likely connected, with the snoRNA decline likely acting as a signal for seed dispersal. This interpretation is in tune with the growing body of literature showing that snoRNAs regulate a multitude of biological processes such as post-transcriptional modification of RNA, including acetylation, regulation of splicing patterns, stability and control of mRNA abundance, and translation [13,30,31].…”

“…One major biogenetic process involved in the regulation of transcription and processing of pre-mRNA complexes in the nucleus involves the role of small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs). A role of snoRNAs in pre-rRNA processing in relation to ribosome biogenesis has become apparent from RNA deep sequencing and in situ localization studies in Arabidopsis [12,13]. The organization of tomato box C/D snoRNAs in concert with heat shock elements suggested the possibility of their functional role(s) in ribosomal RNA biosynthesis together with other proteins regulated by plant hormones and stress [11], apparent also by the role(s) of S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) in ribosome biogenesis and rRNA methylation shown in Escherichia coli [17].…”
