The exceptionally high diversity of small carnivorans from the Late Miocene hominid locality of Hammerschmiede (Bavaria, Germany)

Abstract: The present study deals with new material of carnivorans (Mustelidae, Mephitidae, Ailuridae, Potamotheriinae and Viverridae) from the basal Tortonian (Late Miocene, late Astaracian) hominid-bearing locality of Hammerschmiede (Bavaria, Germany). The small carnivoran fauna includes 20 species belonging to nine different subfamilies (Guloninae, Lutrinae, Mellivorinae, Potamotheriinae, Leptarctinae, Mephitinae, Simocyoninae, Genettinae and Viverrinae). The identified forms include: “Martes” sansaniensis, “Martes” … Show more

“…jaegeri covers from the Early Miocene (Pellecahus, France; MN 4; Roman & Viret 1934) to the early Late Miocene, as it has been found in Rudabánya (MN 9;Werdelin 2005). Paralutra garganensis, however, shows a very different morphology from its older relative and this led many authors to consider its generic attribution doubtful (Wang et al 2018;Kargopoulos et al 2022).…”

“…From this level alone, 112 vertebrate species are known (147 from all levels together), including 73 species of mammals (84 mammals in total from the outcrop). So far, only a fraction of the enormous vertebrate fauna has been studied in detail, including carnivores [7][8][9][10], artiodactyles [11][12][13], beavers [14], small mammals [15][16][17][18][19][20] and birds [21][22][23].…”
