The Evolving Structure of Rural Construction Land in Urbanizing China: Case Study of Tai’an Prefecture

Abstract: With a rapid surge in urbanization, rural functions and the structure of rural construction land are undergoing profound change. Using the village-level units of Tai’an Prefecture in the North China Plain as the research object, this study employs the land use survey data in 2019, selecting the diversity index, concentration index, land use type, and location index to analyze the spatial pattern of rural construction land structure. Thereafter, a multiple linear regression model is developed to identify the dr… Show more

“…This model has recently been applied in several other fields, such as economics, geography, environmental science, etc. [ 58 , 59 , 60 ]. In this study, the complementary relationship among the three functional indices (LFI, PFI, and EFI) calculated above does not necessarily exist and cannot be represented by the triangle model [ 61 ].…”

“…Compared with the rapid development of cities globally, rural decline due to urbanization has become a common problem faced by all countries worldwide [1,2]. Rural recession, manifested in farmland loss, population decline, economic depression, and environmental degradation [3], leads to a decrease in rural development capacity and threatens rural sustainability and resilience [4]. However, it is still argued that rural areas will relocate to the development center due to emerging global issues, such as climate change, food and energy security, and biodiversity [5].…”

“…With the advancement of new urbanization in China, the demand for rural construction is increasing, which will lead to a substantial expansion of rural construction land (RCL) [18]. Therefore, the greening of the RCL is meaningful for both the green development of rural communities and China's new urbanization [3,19]. The greening of RCL refers to a land use mode in which the fewest resources on limited land are consumed to obtain the maximum social, economic, and environmental benefits; the concept of green development guides the construction of green land use paths, aiming for harmony between humans and nature and utilizing green methods, technologies and policies as its tools.…”

“…However, part of the land increment income from transactions is paid to the farmers as compensation for land acquisition, and most of it is used as fiscal revenue used for urban construction by the local government [5]. Therefore, on the one hand, China's long-standing urban-rural dual land system has actively promoted China's urbanization development; on the other hand, it has also widened the urban-rural development gap [6][7][8].…”
