The evolving field of Big Data: understanding geographic information systems analysis and its transformative potential in ophthalmic research

Abstract: Purpose of reviewThe purpose of this review to is to highlight alternative uses of Big Data in the pursuit of ophthalmologic public health. In particular, we highlight geographic information systems (GIS) analysis as a type of Big Data, summarize various GIS methods, and enumerate sources of geographic data. Recent findingsThe recent implementation of the IRIS Registry Data, has expanded our real-world knowledge of ophthalmology in the United States. Such innovations in Big Data allow us to better define ophth… Show more

“…These activities include promoting awareness, handling social barriers, assisting patients in obtaining educational resources, aligning healthcare systems with needs, and establishing advocacy partnerships. Recently, the ability to apply Big Data to study remote sensing and mapping technologies has dramatically improved 4 and enhanced our understanding of geographic heterogeneity across different regions 5 .…”

“…The literature [15] proposes a geographic information-based autonomous domain-level Internet topology visualization method, which is used to solve the problem that the Internet topology visualization method cannot combine topological features with geographic information. In summary, the goal of geospatial information grids is to provide a wide range of geospatial information services to a large number of users, where the grid acts as an infrastructure in the Internet environment, and distributed GIS functional components provide rich services for processing geographic data [16]- [17].…”
