The evolved nest, oxytocin functioning, and prosocial development

Abstract: Prosociality, orientation to attuned, empathic relationships, is built from the ground up, through supportive care in early life that fosters healthy neurobiological structures that shape behavior. Numerous social and environmental factors within early life have been identified as critical variables influencing child physiological and psychological outcomes indicating a growing need to synthesize which factors are the most influential. To address this gap, we examined the influence of early life experiences ac… Show more

“…In effect, the EDN supports the social proximal processes in Bronfenbrenner's ecological model (Merçon-Vargas et al, 2020) that foster humanity's species-typical nature described earlier. A species' developmental system provides the supportive care that co-constructs, for example, a healthy body (that resists infection), cooperative intelligence (critical for learning to find local food sources), a prosocial physiology (Carter & Porges, 2013;Tarsha & Narvaez, 2023), ecological relational consciousness (Shepard, 1998a), and psychosocial wellbeing (a critical feature of human adaptation) (e.g., Narvaez, 2014;Narvaez et al, 2013b;Shonkoff et al, 2021).…”

“…The act of nurturing through breastfeeding extends to other aspects of caregiving, where mothers are more likely to respond to their baby's signals promptly and empathetically. This approach creates a nurturing environment where the baby feels valued and understood [14].…”

“…When a baby suckles at the mother's breast, sensory receptors in the nipple are stimulated, releasing oxytocin from the brain's hypothalamus. This release causes the milk to flow through the ducts, allowing the baby to feed [14].…”
