The Evolution of Simulation and Its Contribution to Competency

Abstract: Nurse educators are challenged to implement teaching strategies that promote learners' clinical competency and critical-thinking skills. Additionally, these educators are asked to base their curriculum decisions, teaching practices, and evaluation methods on current research findings. Simulation offers a unique mode for experiential learning and evaluation, but the appropriate use of the spectrum of simulation typology requires strategic planning. Although simulation provides educators with new educational opp… Show more

“…The goal is to use experiential learning to provide learners the opportunity to practice clinical episodes that alter one's way of understanding and perceiving future clinical situations. The experience is meant to guide the participant to develop skills by mirroring the true contextual environment and situation (Decker et al, 2008). In nursing, practice is a key component to skill-based learning.…”

“…They frequently verbalized appreciation for the opportunity to develop skills and make mistakes while learning to care for simulated labor, postpartum and newborn patients prior to attending hospital clinical. Neither educators nor students are endorsing the replacement of clinical patient care with simulation but the combination of the two should potentiate the learning effect [1][2][3]10].…”

“…As a result, nursing students are getting limited opportunities in clinical practice sites to become proficient at basic nursing skills, communication techniques and critical thinking. Nurse educators and educational programs are seeking alternative clinical experiences to supplement the standard clinical experience now being utilized [1]. High fidelity simulation offers a safe alternative to allow students to expand their knowledge and abilities without putting patients or students at risk [2].…”
